I was baptized Catholic but refused to go through confirmation because I wasn’t 100% sure of the Catholic church and I didn’t want to say the words if I didn’t believe it. I then left the church for about 15 years. In the meantime, I got married to my husband in a Christian ceremony (first and only marriage for both of us) and we have an infant daughter.
I confessed and have been going to mass with my daughter. I plan to go through RCIA classes this fall with my confirmation next Easter. I am also having my daughter baptized.
My question is whether there is any defect in my marriage now that means I can’t take communion until I am confirmed, or if I have to be celibate until then, or if there is something else I need to do.
My husband is fine with me and our children being Catholic, but he does not want to come and is wary of any attempts to make him. I am hopeful that I can influence him by example over the years and that he will one day join the Church. He is a good man, but cautious. I am afraid that if I tell him that we have to be celibate until Easter that he will be biased against the Church forever.
He said that he would come to my confirmation and our daughter’s baptism to support us as a family. He may be willing to participate in any kind of additional blessing that would be required, so long as the requirements for him are not very demanding.
