Is there a requirement that I must be married by the state in order to get married in the Catholic Church?

In theory, there is no requirement that a couple must have their marriage recognized by the state in order to be married in the Church. In practice, the Church ordinarily requires that the marriages it performs be legal in the eyes of the civil government. If you are getting married in the U.S., you very likely will not find a Catholic priest or deacon who will preside at an illegal marriage.
