Do I have to read DaVinci Code to know it's bad?

It was simply popular fiction, diverting, enjoyable, and much more interesting to read because of all the attacks on it.
Not quite. Dan Brown has been quite forthcoming that he believes major portions of the book are factual. Either that, or he’s lying in interviews in order to boost book sales.

Either way, Brown is lying about a great number of things, and in the process slandering the Christ and the Church.

That is quite possible and it wouldn’t be the first time. I believe the author of Memoirs of a Geisha strongly implied that his novel was based on fact and it turned out he made the whole thing up. But I do believe that Brown is actively trying to savage the Church as well as boost his sales.

Do I have to watch an X-rated Porn Movie to be able to argue that porn goes against God? I know enough about it to just know it’s true. Same with Brown’s book. Garbage. Would make the devil very happy if we all read it though. He loves to plant tiny seeds of doubt.

A Mason friend told me TDC has gotten so many yuppie men interested in esoterica and secret societies that they are joining the Masons at a brisk clip.

Last fall and winter I worked at a bookstore that sold only remainders. Hardly 30 minutes could go by without someone who didn’t understand the concept of remainders coming in and asking for either “The Da Vinci Code” or “The South Beach Diet.”

And then when they make the movie of TDC thing will just get worse.

I do have some hope that the movie might eliminate many of the more esoteric stuff in favor of concentrating on the “action/adventure” parts of the story, all depends on who the director is though. Hopefully John Woo or somebody else who only cares about fights and chases and cool special effects LOL. It would help minimize the impact.

I wonder how many Da Vinci Codes have been sold as a result of all the complaining by Christians. That’s the reason I read it. All the free advertising provided by the folks denouncing Brown sparked my interest.

I think the director is Ron Howard.

If eating meat sacrificed to idols would give scandal, then don’t eat it, for the sake of the one who believes in the sacrifice (I Cor 10:23-29); I think this means you can read the book without giving scandal. If someone asks you to read the book so you can give a fuller opinion, then they are assuming in advance that you may not agree with it. You might even be a more effective discussant if you read it, simply because they’ll be more open to what you have to say. And you know it’s not a real sacrifice–i.e. you know that it’s not true stuff, so you won’t be harmed. It isn’t the kind of material you have to flee from–although I have seen at least one Catholic start saying somethingorother about Mary Magdelene and Our Lord Jesus Christ, and I couldn’t tell the extent to which she had been injured by the material, nor how weak she was to start with. So for some people it may be stuff to flee from. Alas, that’s the very population that can’t resist, like a moth to the light.

I just found a fine new review of the book, to help you prepare yourself. As I also in all things please all men, not seeking that which is profitable to myself, but to many, that may be saved.*
