Do I keep this a secret?

My FI and I are getting married 05.15.2009 (YAY!) and he is taking care of all our honeymoon plans. He picked out the location and made all the arrangements by himself and has kept it a total secret (which is really hard for him). Well, today I checked my online banking and FI must have booked the hotel because it posted on the account as the name of the hotel! Normally businesses use abbreviations or something, but noooo not this time.

So now I know the location (and I’m super excited about it, we’re going to have so much fun), but he’ll be really sad if I let on that I know about the surprise. He never checks that bank account, but what if he asks me if it posted (which he will), and what it posted as? Do I tell him the truth? Do I make something up?

Congratulations!

Ooh, I’d love to be in your position.

As for your quandary, if it were me I’d tell him, but I’m terrible at keeping secrets. Besides, then you can be all excited about the actual place, rather than pretending to be all excited about not knowing what you already know. It’s more honest.

That’s my two cents. But I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful blessed trip anyway. Congratulations again!

I wouldn’t lie. If he asks you how it posted, I’d tell him.

That being said, if he doesn’t ask, I’d let him keep planning the surprises. There’s nothing more endearing than seeing your honey work so hard to surprise you…

Congratulations! 🙂

If he asks, I’d tell. I’d worry that if I made something up, for some freakish reason he’d check and find out that I lied - even though it would’ve totally been to spare his feelings. So go with the truth. You only know the hotel - not all the details… it will still be a suprise.

What a sweet guy to do all of this for you!!! 👍

PS. Agree with Kevin’sgirl… if he doesn’t ask - mums the word.

Just curious as to why it posted to your account if he’s making all the plans?

Or do you already have a joint checking/credit card account?

Anyway, I agree with the others, don’t lie if he asks.

I would probably not start your marriage off with a lie as well intentioned it might be 👍

Yep, I agree. If you do have to 'fess up, make sure to tell him how excited you are about this, so he’s not too disappointed that you found out the surprise. Knowing that he chose well should help. 🙂

Yeah, I don’t want to make up a lie, but if he asks “if” it posted, I will just say “yes, it did”. If he asks “how” it posted, I’ll tell him. I really hope he doesn’t ask for details because I don’t want him to be sad! You don’t even understand - I knew the proposal was coming (August), but he still swears up and down that I knew nothing about it because he had planned it so secretly.

Re: why it posted to my account - my credit card has a higher limit than his does, and I’m paying for the wedding so it’s easier to post on my account than to have me write him a check anyhow.

Re: I “only know the hotel” - I know the hotel and location!

P.S. I’m so excited 😛

EmBee,

Is he the kind of guy who appreciates transparency? I know you aren’t going to lie, which is certainly the right decision, but what do you think about telling him up front what happened?

Would he appreciate knowing you know – even if it takes away the joy of surprising you?

Some people might be hurt that you kept it a secret. You know, like when you get to the place and he says “Are you surprised!?” with a big smile on his face – how will you answer?

Hey… my hubby also planned our honeymoon as a surprise!!! 😃 😃

Surprises are his “thing”, so if I ever found out about his plans (and yes, I’ve come across some of them over the years) I keep quiet about it… because he LOVES (trying) to keep surprises. Telling him would spoil his fun and enjoyment of giving.

The funniest thing happened on our honeymoon, though… before we got married he told me to go get my passport, “just in case” for our honeymoon. I was thinking - YEAH - first time out of the country! 😃
So the day after our wedding we took the train (so romantic - but not-so international ) to Washington DC for a few days. When we were there he let it slip accidentally that where we were headed for the 2nd leg of our trip (NY city) - he said “Oh, we’ll just do that when we get to NY” and I said “OH REALLY!?!” He slapped his mouth  and was so shocked he had let his own secret out! LOL! It was hilarious!

Anyway… enough about me :D… have fun on the honeymoon! But if your fiance is anything like mine, let him keep the secret - it’s more fun for him that way! 😉

Congrats on your upcoming wedding! 🙂 God bless!

Your DH does sound like my FI! I’m terrible at keeping secrets, hopefully I can walk around until May with a straight face!

A week ago he started dropping hints about how we’d “need our passports in order to get to the honeymoon if we were driving straight there”! What a liar, now I know for sure we’re staying in the states

Oh, EmBee, I hope it came across that I wasn’t offering advice about what you should do – just asking how your fiance likes to approach things. I think different personalities might feel differently about it. For instance, some might want to know up front, even though it would take away the surprise. For some, it worse to say “Surprise!” to someone and they tell them – “I already knew.” And the *longer *they already knew the more disappointing.

Others, I suppose, enjoy the idea of working on the surprise (even if it won’t be a surprise) so much that you wouldn’t want to take that away from them.

So. . . are you going to tell US where you are going? 😉 😃

I wouldn’t spoil the surprise, by saying you know, unless he asks of course. Don’t ask, don’t tell policy, I’d go with. 😛 Congrats and blessings for a beautiful wedding and marriage.
