This might be a silly question… but I have a blog. I’m writing a blog post which is basically a prayer meditation/reflection on the Passion of Our Lord. I read that according to Canon Law, books of prayer “for the public or private use of the faithful are not to be published without permission of the local ordinary.” This is not a book… yet it is published… and it is on a spiritual topic… there are prayers there that I wrote… am I supposed to get an Imprimatur? again sorry if this is a silly question, I know that blogs don’t get Imprimaturs and I read the article about this that was posted on various websites called “Do Blogs Need Imprimaturs?”. The only reason I’m asking though is because this isn’t just a blog of my thoughts on life, this is a prayer reflection on a Biblical topic, and includes written prayers. Does anyone know?

I think that, in about 20 years, we might be able to answer your question. It will probably take about that long for anybody in the Curia to know what a blog is.

Heck, if this Forum was published in a book, it would probably need an imprimatur.

Until the Vatican catches up and updates the rules (one way or another), blog away!!! And we’ll keep posting on CAF!

On a purely practical level, I think a bishop would have a problem giving an imprimatur to a blog or a web site. Today he gives his approval and tomorrow the person completely changes the words. It’s kind of an interesting question to ponder.

There are several priests who write blogs and they don’t have/need an Imprimatur, so…

Plus as SuscipeMeDomine alluded to, a blog is constantly changing - it’s not like a book that is published.

Well, I would put a disclaimer on the site explaining it’s purpose, the personal nature of the prayers you wrote, as well as the source of any others. Then put a line that you have not sought an Imprimatur or consulted with the local diocese and are publishing as an individual. Something like that.
