I sometimes find myself letting Jesus’ name slip out casually or as an expression of surprise. Should I confess?

Justin

If you do not have full consent of the will, which it sounds as though you do not, you are not in a state of mortal sin and do not have to confess it. Of course, I could be wrong about you having full consent of the will.

While your sin is most likely not mortal, being unintended on your part, it’s certainly a bad habit, and one that confession (as well as keeping a swear jar) would help you rid yourself of.

This is probably a venial sin. Certainly you should confess it. Confession helps us root out our faults that cause us to sin and fixes them! Don’t beat yourself up over these venial faults, just work on making progress toward getting rid of them. The earlier the better. Remember, the temporal punishment for venial sin must be expiated by good works and prayer in this life or by fire in purgatory after death. I would hate to see what MY “purgatory clock” looks like!

you must confess grave matter, if you know that it is grave matter, you did it with full free consent of the will with the deliberate intent to commit grave matter. If these conditions do not exist, no you did not commit a mortal sin and no you do not need to confess. We do however have the obligation to work on our spiritual habits to eliminate these lapses. It is at most venial sin if you were aware of and intended to do it, and confessing venial sin is effective in combatting those tendencies. But no you are not obligated to confess unless the 3 conditions for mortal sin were present.

Venial sin absolved by going to Mass. Try to find other words to use though.
