Do I need to go to confession?

Last Sunday I ended up not going to Mass.In fact I had been attending mass everyday, and I was preparing to go on Sunday.But I had a sore throat and bad cold,and I was told it would be selfish of me to maybe give my cold to other parishoners.
At this point,probably most of you would say that if I was sick, and it was a snowy day, the Lord would understand.(And I hope you still say that)
My problem is that I did not do any special praying or reading to otherwise make up for missing my Sunday obligation that day
My cold is still lingering, but as soon as I can I wish to have communion.Do you think I have to go to confession first?

It sounds like you’re fine to receive Communion for just the reasons you’ve said.

I wouldn’t say you committed a mortal sin in missing mass. In fact, the parishioners are probably very thankful that you didn’t get any of them sick. I know there is a fine line between scrupulosity and denial (at least there has been to me), but really, based on what you said, and in your heart, you know you are okay.

When you are ill, you no longer have the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. The lifting of the obligation is not conditioned upon your saying extra prayers or watching mass on TV or reflecting on the Sunday readings. Any of these things would be good and praiseworthy to do, but you are not obliged.

Thank you for your reminder that making the Lord’s Day holy involves more than going through the motions of attending Sunday Mass. Yes, when there is good reason to miss Mass, we’re still supposed to do what we can to make the day holy. Maybe you committed a sin – but I suspect it would be a venial sin – or none at all if you were truly too sick to even pray. Good thing to talk to a priest about!

I have received two different opinions from priests at confession on this subject. One told me that if I am visiting my parents/Mama (Methodists) and none of us can drive, that is a good enough reason to miss Mass. The other said that I should have called a taxi.

So I don’t know what the answer is really. But even Father Coropi said that if you are ill you are excused.
