I am having surgery next week and planned on going to confession the day before. After Mass tonight I asked my parish priest to bless me and told him about the surgery. He told me to go with him to the office and he would anoint me. My daughters and I followed and he started the annointing. At one point he was telling them what was happening and he said “all her sins are forgiven”, meaning mine. it all happened so quickly and I was pretty emotional about it all that I did not think to ask for clarification.
Does this mean that I do not have to go to confession?

The confession is needed for the sacramental effect of the anointing. Normally one that is conscious has confession prior to receipt. It sounds like he did not explain it.

The primary effect of the anointing is spiritual, and that sometimes results in physical healing also.

If a person is able and had mortal sins…yes they receive first the Sacrament of Confession

(the OP of course is not saying they had any mortal sins…but just wanted to go to confession the day before the surgery…and since venial sins would have been forgiven was wondering…of course venial sins can be forgiven in many ways…but confession is particularly recommended…so I would go…and maybe even to Daily Mass if one can…)

Oh, I assumed that an unconfessed serious sin existed.

Thank you all for your answers. I went to confession this morning. The priest advised me to be annointed. I told him the situation and he’s said that all my sins had been forgiven then but I am glad I went again. like someone said, we can always use more grace.
