Today is the Assumptuon of Mary so May God be blessed for this. However do I need to go to mass today because of if. Can I go to a 6pm Mass and still have it count?

If the Assumption falls on a Saturday or Monday, in the U.S. the obligation is waived. Just out of curiosity, I checked around and it seems Masses are very few this morning.

The vespere Masses (after 4pm) are for the Sunday obligation, but as I understand it the readings could be from the feast of the Assumption.

And this goes for all Holy Days of Obligation in the US excepting Holy Christmas (being the holiest of all holy days of obligation - remember, Easter always falls on a Sunday, so is not considered a holy day of obligation) and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (as it is our patronal feast day - though, if Dec. 8 falls on a Sunday, the solemnity is moved to Dec. 9, and the obligation is abrogated).

ok thank you so much I was worried I was going to miss Mass. If I don’t have to go that would be a help.

Did you read your parish bulletin? If you don’t have one handy, check your parish’s website.

This is the info our parish received from the Archdiocese:

*The Solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on Saturday, August 15, 2015, and on Monday, August 15, 2016. Neither of these Solemnities are holy days of obligation in the USA.

While the Solemnity is not celebrated as a holy day of obligation, it remains a solemnity. This means that ritual masses such as Nuptial Masses, Masses for Various Needs, and Votive Masses are not permitted. However, a wedding or confirmation may occur at Mass on August 15. In these cases, the formulary for the Assumption is used. When either the Rite of Marriage or the Rite of Confirmation is added, one of the readings from the marriage or confirmation Mass options may be used in place of one of the Assumption readings. Please check the Rite of Marriage, Choice of Rite, no. 11 for more information.

Masses for the Dead are permitted on August 15th because the Solemnity is not celebrated as a holy day of obligation.

Evening Prayer II of the Solemnity and Night Prayer II are used on Saturday evening instead of the Sunday schemas. Night Prayer II closes with the final anthem Ave, Regina cælorum.*

In England and Wales, the Solemnity is celebrated on Sunday this year. It is a Holy Day of Obligation, but as others have said, it’s a Sunday anyway!

I went to Vigil Mass tonight and we had the readings for the Assumption.

Easter is always a holy day of obligation because it falls on a Sunday; all Sundays are holy days of obligation.

I do wish that Holy Days of Obligation could simply be kept for the day they are on. I find it bizarre that while friends are keeping the Assumption on a Saturday, other parts of the world are keeping it on Sunday. It also places travellers in a difficult position. it just doesn’t seem the same when the Ascension is kept on a Sunday either.

I agree. We should stop trying to make things more “convenient.” Honestly, one hour for Mass isn’t asking too much.
