I’ll try to give you the short version, but I want to make sure that you have all the information:
My apartment complex only allows 3 cats, yet my wife and I have 4. We used to foster sick kittens from the local animal shelter until they were healthy enough to be adopted. At one point we had 3 cats for which we were unable to find suitable homes, so we formally adopted them ourselves. Shortly after, a family to whom we had adopted a previous cat asked if they could return him to us as they were unable to care for him. Rather than take him back to the shelter where it was likely that he would be put down, we formally adopted him as well, leaving us with 4.
While our maintenance supervisor and one of the leasing managers of a sister property are aware of our situation, I don’t believe that anyone higher up in the real estate company which owns the property is aware. We don’t lie about having 4 and make no effort to hide it (they all routinely hang out in our window, sometimes all at the same time), however we would rather not advertise this fact higher up the ladder and risk being evicted or charged penalties. I am aware that this is probably not a mortal sin and I’m not very worried in that regard. However, I do want to go to confession for Divine Mercy Sunday, and I would imagine that planning to remain in a state of even venial sin would likely invalidate a confession. Since this will not be an easy situation to remedy, especially before the weekend, I would like to know if this is a big deal, or if I’m being scrupulous. I do have a bit of a tendency towards scrupulosity, so it is difficult for me to discern for sure. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
