Do i still need a dispensation?

I am travelling to china very soon. do I need to ask for a dispensation for mass or does the situation lift the obligation on its own?

the only options are to seek out the underground church or attend of the catholic patriotic state-sponsored churches run by the communist government. I’m sure I could do the latter but am I required to? would it even be a good idea? many of them are still well-meaning catholics who don’t even understand the situation for the most part.

My personal opinion is I would not receive their Communion until such a time I am sure that it is licit.

It is a sad situation in China as it is. The fact that it is difficult to find a licit mass perhaps reminiscent of the early Church. However when there is persecution the faith of the believers would get stronger because the Lord is with them.

Normally, the obligation is waived if one physically cannot attend Mass, and there not being a non-persecuted church to go to for several thousand miles certainly would qualify; but there is no harm in asking for the dispensation.

Your presence as an outsider seeking the underground church would only endanger them.

I will try to get it tomorrow, but in the event that I can’t get a hold of a priest, is it a big deal?

I wasn’t planning to seek out the underground church. that is not feasible. I wouldn’t even know how to go about that anyways.

I’m wondering if for some reason I can’t get the dispensation by tomorrow, will that be a problem?

No, it would not. Again, it is understood that the obligation is waived if physically impossible.

such a big adventure and you are hyped trying to sort every aspect; relax and enjoy it!if asking a priest makes you more at peace, then do it.

No. In cases of impossibility the obligation is waived.
