I have a friend who said she ran across a man who had ashes on his head this past Ash Wednesday. Not even knowing what Ash Wednesday is in general, she had pointed the ashes out to the man. He responded, “I am Jewish.” Do you happen to know of any Jews who practice a similar ritual on Ash Wednesday?

No, but I do know that many people, Christian and non-Christian alike, treat the reception of ashes on Ash Wednesday as a cultural rite of passage—sort of like how everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. I also know that is not unheard of for some Jews to participate in the cultural aspects of a larger Christian culture. See the blog post below for another example.
