Do kids these days know too much because of YouTube etc?

Honestly, it depends on the genres in each category. I imagine anime is very female-dominated, with exceptions to shounen. Even then, there are a lot of female shounen viewers, like myself. So-called “need culture” is actually really mainstream.

I think perhaps this is ok though as long as parents only allow them to view this “childish type” content?
YouTube actually has a separate “YouTube Kids” app. The age is for signing up for an account (thereby having the ability to engage in the comments section and post videos). Watching videos is for any age. Some videos are restricted and you have to verify that you are older than 18 in order to watch them (such as videos for certain violent video games). I’m not sure how diligent content creators are in tagging their own videos as “adult” though. I don’t seek out such videos so I don’t really know.

Honestly, my son (who is autistic) loves to watch videos on YouTube. He watches videos of people playing with playdoh and going down water slides. Right now he’s also stuck on the Gummi Bear song. 😣 I had no idea what it was, but it has over one billion views. At least a couple dozen are from my son. 😝

But there’s no danger of him seeking out inappropriate videos as he doesn’t type words. He just taps on the related videos.

I took the OP to be talking about more than just YouTube in particular, though. I think that was just intended as an example. I could be wrong.

I’m pretty sure most kids are interested in watching YouTube videos on video games/anime/popular franchises than random strangers blogging about their sex lives. If they know too much, I doubt it’s from that platform.
Thanks for this. I wanted to post something similar because the videos my kids and their friends watch are dumb and silly but not obscene and not sexual. I feel like there are better things they could be doing with their time but I don’t think they’re endangering themselves in any way.

Added: I do keep an eye on what they are consuming and if any of it were objectionable, away would go the devices.

I don’t know much about Anime so I had a bit of a look online now.The ones I saw look a bit like cartoon porn Ie: a lot of cartoon girls with boobs out or very sexualised etc like even fighting with their boobs lol.
It seems more marketed to males but girls like this too?

Yes YouTube is just an example.Instagram is also another place where young teens can see almost anything.
Eg: girls posing with bums out etc.

I’m very glad your son is getting some joy even if it drives you yourself insane 😹

Yes, I am more concerned about sites like Instagram and SnapChat than YouTube. I think a lot of it depends on your circle of friends.

I just think back to high school and try to imagine the things my friends (and sometimes myself) would be doing if social media existed back then. I can imagine doing lots of dumb/dangerous things in an effort to be funny and/or get noticed. I am very glad I am not in high school in this digital age.

Shounen are action animes geared more towards a young male audience. Those tend to have more of what is called “fan service,” which is what you just described there. There are also slice of life, survival-horror, and romance animes, among other genres. I believe slice of life and romance are more geared towards females. Personally, I can’t stand romance or slice of life, so I usually watch the action stuff. If it’s got good visuals, a good plot, compelling characters, cool concepts and world-building, etc., I can ignore some fan-servicey moments. However, I don’t recall Death Note having any of that and it’s classified as a shounen despite not having much action.
Also, happy cake day!

It’s your Catholic Answers Forum anniversary.

Happy anniversary!

It’s your forum anniversary if it’s single slice.

EDIT: second after posting, I realize that my post is redundant.

The new opiate of the masses.

Yup. When i was a kid, when i wanted to know something. I have to go to the library and go to the card catalog and search for the book and hope the card in the card catalog wasn’t misfiled and looked up the card catalog to find the book. But now, they can go on wikipedia, youtube or the like to find info.

Perhaps the danger of YouTube, Insta, Snapchat etc. is stumbling across content you’re not looking for…
