He seemed to do a lot of denouncing while nouncing what he had peviously denounced.

Of course, after nouncing and denouncing, he renounced what he had once nounced (though had verbally denounced.

After which, his nouncing was announced, which led to more denouncing.

Just sayin

Right now I’m enjoying a strong cup of the devil’s brew (coffee), shown to be good for you using precisely the same methods that established the link between smoking and cancer. But research never stopped a Mormon from living the Word of Wisdom, even when consuming copious amounts of soda - which is very bad for you!

:rotfl:

He did as he wanted when he wanted to do it.
He tickled the ears of those who wanted their ears tickled.
He blasted the ears of those who had brains.
He did this so consistently that his mind became an etch-a-sketch.
As did the minds of those who worshiped him.

Quote:

4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation –

5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling youselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

7 And again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.

8.And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.

9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.

[From the introduction: “10 - 17, Herbs, fruits, flesh, and grain are ordained for the use of man and of animals.”]

18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;

19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;

20 And shall run and not be weary and shall walk and not faint.

21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

End quote

Doctrine and Covenants, Section 89 (considered “scripture” by Mormons)

Comments:

Re 7 - strong drinks are for the washing of our bodies? Does this mean we are to bathe in coffee? alcoholic drinks? or what does it mean to a Mormon?

Re 18 - if I follow this “commandment,” I’ll have a healthy navel and marrow in my bones? Huh?

Isn’t “hot chocolate” a hot drink, or do mormons know how to make “hot chocolate” seem cold?:signofcross:
Like they said…it has been “interpreted” by the LDS church to mean coffee and black or green tea. Some individuals have interpreted that to mean beverages containing caffeine, so they avoid sodas too.

I think the confusing lies in the term hot beverages. The reason some think that he said hot beverages to mean caffeinated drinks is because the only two existing caffeinated beverages around were tea and coffee and if soda existed he would have added that too so they incorporate soda in. Almost no one I know actually thinks he meant all hot beverages.

Dietary fads were around in the 19th century. Avoidance of hot drinks, was a fad, based on publications that indicated hot drinks were injurious to the stomach. Which in turn could cause injury to other areas of the body. An example at google books from “The Graham Journal”: here.

Dietary restriction is a classic employment by charismatic leaders who have a cult following.

So you think they gave up their security and homes, to follow Moses into the desert because he was dull, and mumbled the word of God?
I’ve always been partial to believing the Holy Spirit was with him, giving him a very charismatic disposition.
I suppose if you believe Joseph Smith had a revelation from God you’d have a point. I think you’d also be hard-pressed to call Moses “charismatic”.

Well there is charismatic and there is charismatic. One we use as indicative of a person who has a charism, the other is indictative of a person with charisma.

Moses says of himself, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” … I’d say that is not an attribute of a person who has charisma.

Yet God tells Moses, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”. … I’d say it indicates the charism of Moses.

Aaron was more beloved of the people, than Moses, and a better speaker. He became the spokesman for Moses. It was Aaron who led the people in the building of a golden calf. People followed him, naturally, where they did not Moses.

Smith was the opposite, possessing charisma but not a charism. He was a very good public speaker, with a likable back woods personality (by the accounts of people who knew him).

When people speak of cult leaders as charismatic, it is my understanding they are referring to the person having charisma, not a charism.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Many a great orator did not think themselves so
Many a truely great leader felt very infetior and not up to the task
Moses was away from his people when aaron led them astray
But he got them back on track when he returned 🙂
I’d say the holy spirit gave him adequate charisma

I also don’t believe the gifts of the holy spirit are limited to Catholics.& old testament Jews.
