Its a question which was asked at another forum site, but perhaps it is more likely for Mormons or former-Mormons to be here.

From what I have heard LDS dont consider ANY non-LDS to be following the true faith (Mormonism). So if they are “Christian” they wouldnt consider us to be “Christian”.

The real question I want to know is do LDS use the term “Christian” to describe themselves or is that the name they use to describe Protestants, Eastern Orthodox and Catholics? Sometimes it looks to me like the LDS avoid using the term “Christian” because they want to make it clear they are ENTIRELY SEPARATE from Protestantism, Eastern Orthodox or Catholic.

I always get the mormons confused with the masons.

I actually know the difference, I just like to be annoying.

Mormons consider anyone that believes in the atonement of Christ as “Christian”. However, LDS don’t believe that non-LDS “Christians” are authentic Christians(meaning their belief has no salvific value) because LDS believe that they are the only authentic Christians.

So what is the point of saying the “others” are “Christian” except to give a false impression and/or bait?

They call other groups Christian if they claim to follow the teachings of Christ and believe in the atonement.

But you also said:

I guess I’m not being clear with my terms. LDS have no problem calling people “Christian” if they believe in Christ. However, they consider every religion but their own to be false. Their church is the only authentic church of Jesus Christ.

Ironically, Catholics don’t consider Mormons to be Christians.

And hence the LDS consider themselves to be the ONLY true Christians…THUS, calling others “Christian” in the first place can only be for the purposes of baiting them.

Ironically, Catholics don’t consider Mormons to be Christians.
But we make it clear from the outset that they dont qualify as Christian in the most basic sense (ie Belief in the Trinity).
On the other hand, it appears the LDS have no problem calling others “Christian” yet all the while believing these others are not true Christians at all.

I wonder if this is a form of the “doublethink” written about in this article here on Catholic Answers:

Thanks for your explanation!
