Do Most Protestants Do This?

I have only been n CA for a short time but I have noticed a pattern of behavior that bothers me greatly. It seems that most of our protestants friends that come here do so in an arrogant and hostile way. The threads sometimes start in a friendly manner but quickly deteriorate into a “I am smarter than you and you need to listen to me” tone. The idea that they look down upon us Catholics is very evident and there is no attempt to hide it.

Am I the only one that sees this or is this the pattern? If it is the pattern, how do you all get past this attitude and have productive and God honoring discussions? I am finding it very difficult.

I see it the other way around. Been there done that.

I have a good friend who is a Reformed Baptist. He is a very good friend, and I credit him with being one of the reasons I returned to Christ - if God had not worked through him, I would probably be worshiping a false faith at this moment. When I returned to Christ and told him I was heading into the Orthodox Church, he was hesitant. However, he did much research (including links I provided on my blog) and came to realize I was as Christian as he was. We get along perfectly fine, and rarely argue about anything. So to answer the question you pose in the title: not all Protestants do that.

I think we should remember that most non-Catholics who come here do so for two main reasons: 1) because they want to become Catholic and want to do more research; 2) because they want to engage Catholics in some form of discussion, whether it be to “win souls” or argue a point. Due to the fact many will fall into the second category, we have to realize most members of a group who come to this forum will be performing that deed. As such, it will seem like most of them do that very thing.

I have to also confess that at times I’ve seen Catholics be just as arrogant and condescending to Protestants. I understand that tempers flare and things can sometimes get personal, especially when speaking about what we hold dear, but both sides should remember that we do not belong to a club or political party. Rather, we belong to the community that worships the true God. We should therefore do everything in his name and to his credit.

It saddens me when I see a thread title that suggests a topic on the Reformation or some doctrine of Protestantism, and when I click on it and read the responses all I see are trolling between the two sides. The forum would be much more progressive if we engaged in more discussion than insulting.

I try to focus on the many protestants who enrich the boards (even when I don’t agree with them) like Jon NC and O.S. Luke and many other respectful and knowledgeable brothers/sisters. Sometimes we have some so-called Catholics (usually of brief if annoying stay) who are real miseries too so I figure it can “even out.”

I think it occurs on both sides; some of the posters in here are so firmly rooted in their convictions and unwilling to view it from the others perspective it quickly turns ugly in here.

I think most of us should stop for a minute and reflect why we are in here and is it possible to have rational dialogue without having it disolve after two or three posts. Its one thing to respectfully disagree but when it evolves into a verbal shoving match between various religious groups, it can be easy to lose the desire for dignified exchange of ideas.

Can you please do us all a favor and quit posting in this thread. It appears that all you want to do is cause trouble.

No. It’s just like anything else the more vocal (and those that stand out the most) are the arrogant and hostile ones. I am sure that the more ‘vocal’ Catholics are the ones that our Protestant brothers and sisters remember most as well on here.

God bless

Why did you start this thread and then say I was one of whom you were speaking of?

I think that we can all see by your short involvement here that you sole intention is to cause trouble and to frustrate. It is a pattern with you. I for one would love to see you become a meaningful participant in thread instead of the short one liners that are intended to annoy people. I think you have many years of wisdom that you could share if you so choose.

Arrogance has no religion, and people on all sides and of all religions and denominations act in an arrogant manner. The forum has a report function if you feel someone is out of line, and an ignore function if you don’t feel that’s working.

I did not come here to cause anyone anything. When I say something that is meaningful all I hear is critizm from you and others. Maybe there is a reason you are annoyed?

Yes, I agree with your comments. I know I can be aggressive at times. It just seems that Catholics are treated as ignorant people who want to know Christ but we just don’t have a clue.

Someone earlier mentioned JonNC and I agree with that post. He has been nothing but exemplary in his ability to dialog.

Maybe you can start a different thread about your experiences here. It seems to me that the grief you get is due to your claim to be Catholic while publicly rejecting several core teachings of the Church. 🤷

I don’t recall saying that you are ignorant. I suppose that you are probably a nice person, since I don’t know who you really are I can only guess. Anyway God Bless you in whatever you do.

Thank you Tweety.

Nice post…I tend to give everyone respect as a fellow believer and look more to the maturity of the poster and the contest of the post…I do tho view the church beyond my local ecclesia as the living stones with tares mixed among us all…I try my best to conduct myself as I would if the poster I was responding to was in my LR…I am disabled from complications from a work accident and view these forums as part of my ministry of encouragement…We still all see through the glass darkly so we all should respond humbly and respectable as we are all still learning…grace and peace…K
