Random question. It occured to me that per Islam one’s good deeds must outweigh their bad ones to go to heaven(I think). But is there s place where Allah can deal mercifully with those who, while they have sinned, do not necessarily deserve ETERNAL punishment? Do grace and mercy fit into the Islamic equation, or is Allah a god of strict merit? Thanks.

The most I can tell you is that I’ve heard one good deed outweighs 10 bad ones.

According to a past worker of mine. No. They do not “go anywhere, they just die”. This may be from one sect of the religion.

I think we’ll have to wait for a well-informed Muslim member to respond. But I’ve never heard this before. AFAIK, Islam believes in both a Heaven and a Hell.

P.S. I can say that Judaism believes in Purgatory, but for no more than one year.

Muslims believe one is saved by God’s Grace, the deeds have no intrinsic value it is just God’s Mercy is closer to those who work righteousness. In fact to believe the deeds will save you is considered a lesser form of polytheism, since one is attributing some power to something other than God.
After death Muslims believe one is ‘in the grave’ and this can be either a place of chastisement or felicity. This is very much like the idea of purgatory. Then everyone is resurrected on the last day and goes to heaven or hell. From here one can also be in hell for a finite amout of time to purge oneself of sin before salvation. So that even people with ‘an atoms weight of faith’ eventually end up in paradise. Thereafter they are eternal.
Hope that helps.

That is why I stated
This may be from one sect of the religion. Her words not mine.

I realize salvation all depends on the ultimate mercy of Allah, and not on good deeds per se, important as they may be. However, I was also informed that belief in Muhammad as the seal of the Prophets is a big plus as well.

Basically - from their perspective - only Islam saves [see 3:85] and there is ijma’ (consensus) by all four Sunni schools. Belief in Muhammad as the seal of the Prophets is an article of faith, i.e. without it means one is without religion. It is the position of Islam itslef. Other religions do not save. However, Muslims do not believe all non Muslims are in hell. Ghazali is famous for articulating that since God doesn’t punish a people before sending a messenger then until one conciously rejects Islam is considered innocent no matter what they do. This is even true of those that recieve a distorted image of Islam, which means Sunni Muslims would say most non Muslims are innocents since all they know of Islam is mad suicide bombers and ayatollahs, which of course would not encourage anyone to enter their religion. So God’s Grace for salvation is for those who believe (I’m not using Muslim here on purpose) or are innocent, but His Mercy encopasses all humanity - the sun rises on the just and unjust sort of thing.
Hope that helps
