I was wondering if any non-Catholic Christians fast?
If you do, how does it help you spiritually?

Thanks!

A number of them do. I think it clears your mind and helps you focus on spiritual things.

I personally have not but I know many who have. They have said that it clears their mind so they can focus on Christ.👍

Thank you, Zenas. It is amazing that when one is hungry while on fasting, he is more focused on spiritual thing. It helps him deny his own flesh desire. It also helps him think of Jesus even more.

I have fasted but it is difficult for me now as I must take medication daily which can only be taken with food.

Orthodox Christianity has fasts two or three days a week.
Oriental Christianity has at least one fast per week.
(Not sure if you are including them as “non-Catholic Christians”).

In both Protestant Christianity and Restoration Movement Christianity, fasting is purely an individual thing.

Some congregations will have “community fasts”. Some times it is a semi-fast. No food until Vespers. (I remember attending a Protestant Convent on Thursdays for Vespers and a meal. The meal was plain bread and vegetable soup. For the Nuns, that was the first food they had had since Vespers the previous day.I don’t remember if they allowed themselves to have water, or any beverages, during the day.)

There’s a non-denom megachurch preacher in my area who is really pushing fasting, big-time. He’s got a book out extolling the benefits of fasting. Guy’s name is Jentezen Franklin.

Over the years I have worked with many NCC that fast. Some have church wide fasts, weeks or months when the entire church community covenants to fast (at different levels according to age, health, etc).

This year for Lent, a number of people at work were on a 40 day, 6 AM to 6 PM fast, and no meat at all the last week.

During these times, their churches usually have extra resources available…workbooks, readings that go along with the fast. Prayer groups, extra services, etc to keep the focus spiritual, not just “hey, look, I can go without food.”

The participants take this very seriously, and seem to get much good out of it spiritually.

Many many years ago when I was a protestant, a friend gave me a book, “God’s Chosen Fast” i cannot remember the author’s name, but it is written from a protestant perspective. I’m pretty sure it is still in print because I ordered a copy for a friend about 5 years ago. it’s a very moving book, desciribng fasts that are much longer than the ones typically thought about, such as one day, or just foregoing the eating of one type of food.

so yes i would say that fasting is known among protestants.

I know that you addressed this to Non Catholic Christians, but as a Catholic, I wanted to express what I feel on the matter.

I fast and abstain on days required by the Church, but I must admit, it does not help me in my spiritual life although I have prayed that it does. I will continue to do so and maybe some day the Holy Spirit will help me understand the spiritual need for it.

What does it do if it doesn’t help you?

Just because you don’t feel you get any benefit out of it doesn’t mean that you don’t. I suspect you get a lot more out of it than you realize.

I was driving past a Protestant church a couple of months ago and saw on the sing “Daniel fast begins Monday”. Not having a clue what they were talking about I went home and googled it. Here’s a link that explains it.

Yup , we do…although fasting is not compulsory in my church, but many of us fast without being ask to . Because, we believe fasting will help spiritually. Normally all church members go for normal fast which starts from 6am to 6pm without food (except for water) unless those who are on medication or some health problems, then probably would be no meal fast

6am to 6pm? wow, I can’t do that; I can go without food about 5 hours only . I am hungry all the time. I have such a high metabolism. 😃

That is what fasting about 😃 sacrificing a small meal, in return for spiritually growth. No doubt during fasting, its’ make one extremely hungry and sleepy, that is why it is essential to read bible and pray during fasting as often as possible, so that our mind only mediates the goodness of God and not our Hunger.
I encourage you to go on full fast (although Catholic does not practice that if i’m not mistaken ,only abstain of food) but once you go for full fast, you will experience God like never before…
