Cell phone users, beware. The FBI can listen to everything you say, even when the cell phone is turned off.

A recent court ruling in a case against the Genovese crime family revealed that the FBI has the ability from a remote location to activate a cell phone and turn its microphone into a listening device that transmits to an FBI listening post, a method known as a “roving bug.” Experts say the only way to defeat it is to remove the cell phone battery.

“The FBI can access cell phones and modify them remotely without ever having to physically handle them,” James Atkinson, a counterintelligence security consultant, told ABC News. “Any recently manufactured cell phone has a built-in tracking device, which can allow eavesdroppers to p(name removed by moderator)oint someone’s location to within just a few feet,” he added.

A cell phone is not a need of the common person. I have lived without one my 42 years on Earth will continue to live without one for the rest of my time on Earth. The vast majority of those who have a cell phone at church could of easily not brought it in to church. What did you do before you had a cell phone?!

The same argument could be made against having commercial electricity feeding your home or using fossil-fuel powered vehicles, power equipment etc. A century ago almost no one had either-- neither are they a necessity, but would you be willing to part with either??

The main point is DO NOT BRING CELL PHONES (even ones that are turned off) into the confessional. Priests: Do not allow people to bring cell phones into the confessional.
Cell phones, even ones that are turned off can be used as listening devices to spy on people.

According to this audio file there are several things in the news lately that show that confessional privacy is being violated in court AND pro-life people are being targeted. Recently a taped confession was used against someone in court.

i have never understood cell phone “addiction”. Crackberries and what not. I hate mine but its really a work phone – a means to squeeze an extra 4-20 hours of work out of me a month and to interrupt when I am trying to do something with my family.

That overwhelming urge to text – i mean, really, why? Why not call?

Those things you mention make everyday easier and more productive at the same time, and even help with Mass also, ie lighting, pa systems, etc. Modern medicine depnds on them for which my father would be dead from an apendix burst before I was concieved and I’d be dead from a blockage from a big kidneystone. Cell phones do onething and one thing, give the appearance that one can talk to whoem ever while doing other things, like driving and shopping. Cellphones satisify the American worship of multitasking which is no less an idoltery than the Israelites worshiping the golden calf when Moses went to the mountain to get the ten commandments. I choose not to worship multitasking. Any phone call can wait till I’m home when I can put my total concentration on it where it will not be interupting something else

Hmmmm…I guess I’ve never equated “that one thing” with using my cell to call for help when I encountered an automotive breakdown on a desolated interstate or a busy road during rush hour. I’d rather be able to get help when I needed it than to end up dead on the side of the road!!

I disagree, in the above you are trying to cherry pick from an apple tree. Along with the internet, cell phones share the distinction of being the most significant advance in global communication in terms of connecting people in the past 25 years. You say that utilities are good because they make everyday easier and more productive. You say they are good because modern medicine depends on them and you wouldnt be here today if not for modern medicine. If that justifies those technologies (electricity/fossil fuels), then consider cell phones justified as well. You dont think cell phones have saved lives? The use of cell phones to report accidents, burglaries, etc. has drastically cut emergency service response time due to much quicker reporting. Increased connectivity and communication as a result of widespread cellphone use has increased efficiency and productivity of everyday life (not to mention businesses) greatly. If you dont think cell phones and PDAs have helped the medical and emergency response sectors, you need to think again.

Like any other technology, the problem lies not with the cell phone itself, but how it is used/abused. One can “worship the golden calf” just as easily with television, video games, or fancy cars.

My mother is in a home and I feel much more confident knowing that the nurses can reach me quickly in an emergency.
To be honest I can’t imagine any law enforcement officer spending time just to know how dull my life is ! Accepting that technology has advanced so much surely they would only go to that bother if someone was suspected of major crime eg mafia or serial killer.
And it’s not only the confessional that could be dangerous for the criminal with his mobile - there are also lawyers offices, meetings with fellow conspiritors etc.
So we should remove our land lines in case they’re bugged ?

Who needs spies when the priest talks so loud in the confessional that everyone can hear my penance and counsel???


As an aside, my 8 yr old daughter who has only had about 3 or 4 confessions, wanted somewhere to write down what she was going to say, and I had nothing but the keypad on my cell. I let her take it in where she had typed out the Act of Contrition during the quiet time before her confession.
