Do NOT go see the movie "Noah"

If I were a non believer and someone tried to say that this movie “Noah” was based on the biblical story that all Mosaic religions believe, I would be saying “They cannot seriously believe this.”

I find the movie offensive and all I can say is thank goodness the Pope called off sitting down with Russel Crowe to endorse this movie in any way shape or form. If your going to call a movie ‘Noah’ and make it about the biblical story, I believe the least you could do is stick to the story and last time I checked, I don’t recall Noah being a drunkard who didn’t recieve messages from God but interpreted Dreams, nor giant transformer things building and defending the ark, nor do I remember a whole lot of other stuff that I have heard they put in there.

Josh, after Noah landed he cultivated a vineyard got drunk and was found naked by his sons. Ham mocked him and that is the reason Ham left the fold. It is in the Bible.

No, an atheist isn’t going to convert seeing this movie. The original story leaves a lot to the imagination e.g. one man and his three sons are left to build an Ark. I’m sure this has gotten its share of guffaws from non believers for centuries.

Think how the building of that Ark would have been accomplished. The thing was HUGE. So this director tosses in the possibility of Divine Intervention. He’s just surmising. And remember, he isn’t a Catholic, he’s a Jew. Maybe he was raised to see things differently. Apparently, the Nephilim is a part of Jewish belief. They’re mentioned in Genesis. This appears to be where the producer is inspired to make them the Messengers in this movie.

Well, Jesus spoke in parables a lot, parables are by definition fictional narratives that convey a moral truth and the details are secondary to the Truth that God reveals to us.

As for Genesis, according to The introduction on “Reading Your Bible” (st. Joseph ed. Of The New American Bible, 1986) “the Allegory: a figurative story with a veiled meaning…For centuries these chapters have been misunderstood as inspired lessons in science. Tue Bible does not teach science; it teaches religious values. It uses these folktales to teach a lesson…the point of the allegory (not the details) is God’s message to you.”
So Noah’s message that I saw was that God was pained to have to clear the planet, that His mercy was shown to Noah for being “righteous in his generation (paraphrase)”

Noah the movie was a great popcorn flick, great effects, dramatic and had characters that were definately human. Humanity is wicked, and did not deserve the world that The Creator had given to them. I didn’t see an environmentalism ploy in it any more than I read in BL. JPII*conservation.catholic.org/ecologicalcrisis.htm

Do I recommend the movie? Yes, take it for what it is: Hollywood trying to make an action movie out of a story which mostly has been confined to felt cutouts on a Sunday school easel.

from another point of view entirely - the costume designer should be hung, drawn and quartered for the awful costumes. Unless the far-off industrial cities were high tech with electricity and mechanical gizmos, the use of denim and machine knitting is totally anachronistic. Noah wore denim. His wife wore knitted garments frequently, in close-up. Knitting must have died out after the flood, as it wasn’t (re) invented until about 700 years ago There was a strange mix of handspun and commercial fabric/.

The Nephilim being depicted as stock Hollywood rock-monsters may appeal to the sci-fiers, but they were laughable.

Noah doesn’t have a face-to-face talk with anyone, God or angel, about the step by step demolition of the Earth, and why he is to build the Ark. He seems to think that his purpose is to protect the animals (all passed out due to strong aromatherapy courtesy of Mrs Noah), until they can be released to the new cleansed Earth, and then for his family to die out naturally. Nobody told him this was so, he thought it out for himself, deciding that ridding the Earth of mankind was the best thing.

There were animals living before the flood that didn’t make it to the new Earth - probably because the evil stowaway ate them! Noah and his bunch are vegetarian.

Maybe. But I suspect that many people understand that a big production, special effects film made in Hollywood is not a documentary. Perhaps some people will be intrigued by the film and will want to find out more. Popular culture definitely serves a purpose and its products can reach people at a deeper level.

Also, believing in the resurrection is even more weird for non-believers, so we shouldn’t feel particularly concerned about their ridicule on the Noah story. 😉
 
I don’t really have a problem with taking liberties with the story of Noah since it is in and of itself mythology. So expound away! My issue is stripping away the spiritual truths that provide that story its foundation and replacing it with schlock.

I’m all for stewardship of the Earth, but the heavy-handed veganism and lack of any spirituality or anything uplifting whatsoever in this film is just atrocious.

Not only that, Shem WAS the priest.😛

The Jewish Talmud identifies Shem as the priest “Melchizedek” ( Righteous King) who offered Bread and Wine in the presence of Abraham.

He was the prefiguration of Christ as priest, and from whom our Catholic priests trace their spiritual decent ( “You are a priest forever in the line of Melchizedek”- Heb 5:6)

This movie in my opinion is just a way to confuse people and ridicule our faith in a real God, not a mythological creator, by mixing all sort of mythological and crazy ideas such as Rock People who talk and look like they belong in a toddler movie instead. Hollywood is trying to make a mockery out of SACRED scripture. We don’t know every little detail about Noah’s life, but this movie was a joke and actually changed verses in the Bible. Why would you accept this. Please don’t go and don’t take children at least. They may even start thinking Noah is a mythological being as well.

It depends on the individual atheist. A lot of Hollywood movies based on biblical stories got me to reading the Bible as a child…I was raised atheist and my parents did not have the Bible lying around at home so I had to go to a friend’s house to read their Bible. A seed was planted. Remember, God can use anything.
 
I got the idea it was like a Graphic Novel type of depiction like “300”. 300 was based on a historic event but wasn’t historically true to all events that took place and didn’t try to be. I believe they did stress is was inspired by the bible story. As long as they didn’t make it morally questionable I would look at as light entertainment and wouldn’t expect much more from Hollywood. This is the industry that awards and applauds movies about serial killers and selfish amoral people after all. Movies with any true worth are always overlooked. “The Book Thief”, “Catching Fire”, …many others ignored. It’s all political these days.

You know I’ve never thought of it till now but how do we know what stage they were at technically by then. Just because folks now have technology who’s to say they didn’t have it as well. They were just as smart as we are. I’m not saying they had cell phones or computers but they just might have been more advanced then we give them credit for…just saying.
