Why did Jesus say do not touch me to Mary Magdeline? and soon after he let the deciples touch him? He had not gone to the father yet,but he took the thief on the cross to paradise that same day?Trust me I believe, but some things I’d like explained so I can understand and be able to give the right answer,do you have it?🙂 Nancy
 
OK, I don’t think there is any official teaching of the Church on this.

But… I have heard something that, although is a little “out there”, it does make sense.

Mary then moves toward Jesus to embrace Him.  But Jesus says, “***Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father***”.  Why does Jesus tell her not to hold Him, especially knowing that Jesus will invite Thomas to poke Him and probe Him?  Jesus even reasons, “***for I have not yet ascended***…”  As everything else in John’s Gospel this has a reason.  What else ascends into the heavens in the Old Testament?  The Sacrificial Burnt Offerings which atoned for sin.  The only person that could handle a sacrifice after it’s been offered up to God is the Levitical Priests.  The Apostles are going to be the first priests of the New Covenant.  This is one of the reasons that only men are allowed to be priests.

Jesus saith to her: Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brethren, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God.

and its meaning from the Haydock Bible Commentary

Ver. 17. I will not leave you again; be not in a hurry to touch me; you shall all have this pleasure. I will remain with you some time, before my ascension. Announce my resurrection to my apostles. You shall see me again. This is the interpretation most modern commentators put upon this place. Others suppose, that Magdalene imagined he was risen from the dead to live with men as before, like Lazarus. He addresses these words to her to disabuse her of this notion. (Calmet)
 
Both Jimmy Akin and Hank Hannegraaf interpret this verse as meaning, “do not cling to me”, as I have not yet ascended to my father, and therefore you will not get to keep me here with you. In other words, he was explaining that his time back on earth was temporary, so she was not to attempt to keep him physically with her.
 
I guess to me it means more of remaining clean and to be clean when he comes again in glory and embrace him as we aren’t clean by his standards.
 
There are many famous paintings of this moment, ‘noli me tangere’.

There’s tradition’s exegesis then there’s whatever someone speculates about it… 🙂
