Do our physical addictions carry over after death?

I remember talking to a relative who was a devout catholic, he believed humans who die with any kind of addiction or attachment to something here in the world will still have that addiction after they die, like drug addiction, smoking, drinking, etc.

I do not believe this as addictions are related to our bodies, either physical, mental or combo of both, but they still ONLY effect our earthly bodies, not our souls.

For example, in a drug addicted person, the receptors in their brain constantly need the drug of choice for that person, the receptors are a physical part of our brain, our souls, do not have brains or receptors, so no way addictions or attachments like this could carry over imo.

Anyone agree or disagree?

It makes no sense if we are destined for Heaven. If we go to Hell, then yes, perhaps our physical torments will be magnified and exacerbated in the eternal torment of that place. But if we go to Heaven, we are perfected and sanctified, through Purgatory if necessary, and in Heaven there can be no imperfection or flaw. Even our souls will be in perfect bliss with the Beatific Vision. Surely there is no addiction in Heaven.

It may be that our experiences in Purgatory reflect our vices on earth. Perhaps that is what your relative meant?

Even if someone goes to hell or purgatory, I still dont understand how or why a physical addiction someone had could transcend death? after all, addictions are physical or mental, not spiritual…??

IMO, the physical addiction, whatever it may be, would die with the physical body, unless its possible for a soul to develop addictions, but I dont think that is possible.

Our experiences in Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory will not be physical experiences but spiritual ones. When we speak of the “fires of Hell” or the “Beatific Vision” we’re not talking about the physical senses but rather something that will be experienced directly by our soul. Likewise, if we postulate that an addiction will torment us even after we are consigned to Hell (God forbid,) then we imagine it to be a spiritual malady rather than a physical one. And isn’t it true that addictions have more than just a physical dimension? Addictions torment us spiritually here, they are essentially mental disorders, even if they are rooted in physiology, they are more than that.

Excellent response
I will copy and print your words as a reminder and personal motivation.

Addiction is a body state.

We lose the natural, “human body.” We gain instead the spiritual body (pneumatikon soma).

The following verse pretty much sums it up for me…

"he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.”
-Rev 21:4

Any imperfection in us after we die must be purified in Purgatory. Only perfect souls can enter Heaven. Imperfect souls either go to Purgatory or to Hell after death. *Inordinate *love of food, alcohol, cigarettes etc. is a problem to the soul that will keep it from going straight up to Heaven. God bless you.
