My college daughter was home over the holiday. I started joking about some of our leftie relatives who all toasted to Obama one Thanksgiving.

She gave me a little look and told me that after being in college she’s learned some things. Then she went on to tell me how she now understands things. One further inquiry, she says that she’s still sort of in the center, but yada yada yada…

I went to a public university in the 1960s. There was an anti-God, secular humanist leaning in every class. If I had it to do over I would select a Catholic college from the Newman Guide.

I do think, however, that today even at public universities, there is a growing and better organized student-led Christian presence. There are some wonderfully wise and courageous young people – much like centuries ago. It is an amazing work by the Holy Spirit.

Your daughter sounds as if she has a strong and faithful Mom. Your daughter’s heart will always carry your love no matter what she “learns” at school.

Being a liberal is one thing, but being humorless is another. Tell her to lighten up, it’s a bad sign of cult-like thinking that you can’t take a joke about “your team” in politics, religion etc.

And and yes I think it’s pretty clear that universities preach left wing politics. When people graduate and get a job, most people shake off the left wing politics they’re indoctrinated with in school once they have to pay taxes and work for a living. So don’t give up hope if your daughter becomes a left-winger for a while. I’d encourage her to be skeptical of what her teachers say. From what I remembered from college all the students would always take everything their professor said as gospel truth as they listened with rapt attention to the left-wing narrative of history. It’s hard to resist this because once you do you’re uncool and not with the in group. Plus there’s that intellectual pride common to young people when they think they’ve got the world figured out.

Yes, colleges lean left. Hard left. For the most part. There are some exceptions.

My wife and I attended SU. Her for her BS/Theology Degree, and a Theology degree for me I see you have a Seahawks logo. SU is a very leftist "c"atholic university. We are ashamed to have degrees from there. We were young, and did not know better.😉

Toasted on the dead bodies of murdered babies more-like, if you voted for Obama then you indirectly voted for killing your own country-man. Do not try to wiggle out of it with your fancy talk,some people in the USA point the finger at Europe and say how good we are. They forget the prayer of the sinner & the tax collector. " I’m glad i’m not like the rest of men. " If you have a mountain high of babies bodies over there then stop blowing that trumpet, the Lord knows & he will strike the mighty from their thrones, just like oBAMA who’s fall shall be great. And since I’m here, I think a few of the moderators on here are self righteous, deleting posts without explanation, etc;
Good riddance to you all… YES DELETE AND BLOCK ME, YOU KNOW WHO I AM.

I have 2 daughters that graduated from college one in Boston and one in Philadelphia It’s been about 10 years for one and 5 for the other and I’m still praying they fix what’s been broken. They’re still warm and caring young ladies, just not too sure I’m still allowed to call them that:)

It’s Just not college, from grade school on up they teach a liberal agenda. And some teachers will take it out on the kids if they question them.

I don’t wish to be an alarmist, but the great majority of universities in the U.S. are excellent places to lose your faith and turn in to a pretty strong liberal. I’ve heard of it happening so much. There are so many lies espoused as truth at these institutions of higher learning. So what are those latin sayings you read on univeristy buildings that speak of the pursuit of truth? That’s all well and good, but God help anyone who actually finds it. They’ll burn them at the stake. :bigyikes:

Presumably no parents are delighted that - whatever their children’s new-found views (and however dodgy they might sometimes be) - their kids are at least taking the time at college to think for themselves?

Yes most universities (everywhere) are comparatively left-wing institutions. Part of going to college is to establish one’s own identity, and sometimes that means a time away from the values that have been instilled in you from childhood.

And then part of starting a career thereafter is to realize that the real world doesn’t work the way the more doctrinaire professors like to think it does…

If you go to college and don’t graduate changed in some way, you’ve not really been doing it right. I wouldn’t worry about that; most people find their way back again.

Too bad people pay to be corrupted by professors that are teaching false things that they have to unlearn later. Hmmmm there is something not right about that…

I largely agree with you, Murmurs. However, I would say that perhaps many do not find their way back. It might be hard to pin down the numbers, but it’s enough for concern, I think. As long as they make it back before the end of their lives, that’s the crux of the matter.

Why are left wing politics considered to be anti Catholic? I think that the ideals of left wing politics would be equality and sharing with others. Sounds pretty Christian to me.

Well, we would first of all need to agree on a definition of what essentially it means to be liberal. You can define it, I think, in at least 2 or 3 different ways. Probably many more. Some are not necessarily hostile to the Catholic Faith.

Being from Italy, you surely know that Leftists tend to be anti-Christian and pro-abortion.

Do our universities press a liberal agenda? That would be absolutely true.

I would suppose that to even be hired as a professor one has to pretty much exemplify what the institution is about. It is NOT always about higher learning but creating a society of a “hive mind” where most everything is relative. No black and white, just grey.

They claim to be encouraging critical thinking but this lax attitude causes many to lose faith in God.

Not long ago a young couple came to our church with the charism and ministry of preaching. They traveled to different universities to preach the gospel and found that a GREAT many Catholics fell from the faith because their education lead them to the conclusion there was no God,just evolution.

Higher education is wonderful.but it must be put in perspective. It is ALL supposed to be for the glory of God,not man.

Does the sun rise in the east and set in the west?

When I was in college 20 or so years ago, the bulk of my professors were very left-leaning and with some if you didn’t agree with their politics it would affect your grades negatively. It seems to be far worse now, and many people I know in education (K through college) are, at least in their professional lives, vocally anti-Christian, anti-anything that’s not far, far left. I’ve listened to my friends in education sit around and laugh about forcing the parents of Christian students come and bring a change of clothes for their kids who wear anything remotely religious (while the kids sits in the office waiting for them), while at the same time refusing to listen to the same kids’ complaints about kids wearing shirts covered in profanities. Some have admitted to docking kids points because their parents are Christians and/or Republicans, and one said she “accidentally” (complete with air/finger quotes) misplaced a kid’s transcripts until it was too late for him to get a scholarship all because of his parents’ beliefs (and, no, I couldn’t report her to her administrator because she’s the administrator). Leftist indoctrination has become an institutionalized practice in much of the American education system.

Schools in general have become leftist and anti-Christian propaganda centers. Even the ones that have a denominational name, and even elementary schools. I see it where I work ( a university) all the time, unfortunately.

Maybe it is because I went to a British university (Britain as a whole is a little more left-wing than is the United States - though it is not a socialist haven/hell as I think occasionally gets portrayed either), but I would be very, very surprised to find many professors at any British university from inculcating particular views (apart from academic ones eg about a particular historical/economic/etc theory) in their students.

From sheer curiosity…is this something that genuinely happens a lot in American colleges…or is it something that lots of people feel MUST happen just because their offspring return home after their first year thinking differently?

According to the couple who visit colleges with their gospel ministry it is very real and is a direct result of the education. It is NOT just questioning previous beliefs but replacing them with an atheistic set. Science and faith are not supposed to conflict yet these young susceptible students often fall prey to the beliefs of their professors who do believe in atheistic humanism or that we are our own saviors.
