Do parishes buy new Paschal Candles every year?

Why isn’t the new candle blessed? The new one before the Easter Vigil.
It is blessed as part of the opening rites of the Easter Vigil Mass. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the question. Are you asking why the candle isn’t blessed before the Vigil starts, or are you under the impression that it isn’t blessed at all?

This blessing is done outside (at the fire) weather-permitting and all. You might not see it happen if you are usually inside for this part of the Vigil.

Is it possible to make a donation toward the Pascal Candle or is it better to let it come only from church funds and donate to Easter flowers or something like that?

I would love to help a struggling parish buy their candle if it isn’t being too forward

Sure you could make the donation. I’d only suggest being a little careful so the pastor doesn’t take it the wrong way (thinking that you’re trying to “tell him what to do” because you didn’t like last year’s candle or something like that).

Many times I’ve answered a question with “we would have one of those if only we could afford it.” Next thing I know, we can afford it.

Thank you I will try to be very tactful and I won’t mention being given the old candle so it won’t seem as if I have ulterior motives for donating toward it

It might be nice to send money to a parish that is really struggling and buy theirs, then maybe it won’t seem so much like I am trying to be a madam full charge…

We always have a very beautiful and quite grand candle…I am sure it is very costly, but we always have the money for this type of expense…I never gave it any thought about how hard this could be in some parishes

This is the first year we haven’t replaced the Paschal candle; only the number 8 was replaced with a 9 from a strip of numbers sent to us with our purchase last year. The ritual of preparing the candle was still done at the Vigil.

The Paschal candle, as well as representing Christ the Light of the World, also marks the passage of time (like the Advent wreath candles). It only makes sense that you start the new liturgical season with a new candle, even if it costs $300+. That’s less than $6/week.
I believe it was 300 POUNDS not dollars. Makes quite a difference. Perhaps it is a poorer parish.

Our parish buys a tall Paschal Candle every year and sends the old one to the missions to use again.

We order a new paschal candle every year! It has to be done because there are so many baptism and other sacraments that we usually run the paschal candle down to the minimum. We always got ours paschal candles here! They are really good about getting us what we need and haven’t failed yet so might as well keep using them!
