Do priests have to believe in purgatory?

I was shocked recently when my new parish priest commented that purgatory was “made up” and 'leftover from the old testament." Are catholics allowed to reject this doctrine and remain in good standing with the church? I’m concerned because I don’t want our parish to turn into it’s own brand of Protestantism. Any advice on what I should do?

I expect that Father made that statement in ignorance. But ALL Catholics are obliged to accept this defined dogma of faith: “The living Faithful can come to the assistance of the Souls in Purgatory by their intercessions.” (De fide.)
