*I was recently speaking to a protestant (non-denominational) friend of mine. The subject of teenage purity and pre-marital sex came up because he’s dealing with issues relating to his teenage daughter. I told him that I am teaching my pre-teen son that sex is sacred and only appropriate and blessed in marriage. He told me he disagrees and that many protestant churches preach pre-marital sex as a positive thing. He said that they feel marriage is a life-long commitment and a couple can’t tell if they are compatible sexually unless they actually have sex prior to marriage. After he said that, I remembered another friend of mine from high school who was a very religious Baptist, and he told me the exact same thing. I am adamantly against sex outside of marriage. My husband left me 12 years ago, and I haven’t been with anyone since. People call me crazy, and I just say that I’m the last of my kind. But there is no way I agree with what my friend told me. So, on to my questions . . .

What is the protestant view of this? Is this my friend’s personal opinion and he’s projecting it to his religion as a way to validate that opinion? If it’s a church view, which denominations teach this? My friend and I were interrupted so the conversation abruptly ended.

Thanks for any info. *

Which one of the 30,000 Protestant viewpoints are you looking for?

This is their person perference and not the teaching of the Baptists. We believe in not sex until married. No you are not crazy I admire you for sticking to your beliefs.

Conservative Lutheran bodies at least hold pre-martial sex to be forbidden. Here is what the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod says on the matter. This is taken from a FAQ article on the LCMS webite:

lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2126
Q. If an engaged couple has sex before marriage, is the child conceived still considered a blessing? Is the sexual act, though the couple love each other and are promised to each other, still a sin?
A. In its report on “Human Sexuality,” the Synod’s Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR) says:
Sexual intercourse engaged in outside of the marriage relationship is forbidden by the Scriptures and must be condemned by the church (Gen. 2:24; 1 Thess. 4:2-5; cf. Gal. 5:19: Eph 5:3; Col. 3:5; 1 Cor. 6:16-20). . . . Even when the partners feel themselves united by a deep bond of love and intend to be married at some point in the future (“engagement”), the same judgment must be made.
The Bible also clearly teaches, of course, that there is full and free forgiveness for all who repent of their sins and put their trust in God’s Son, Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:1; 1 John 1:8-9).
While Scripture teaches, secondly, that all children born into this world (regardless of the circumstances of their conception) are by nature sinful and unclean (Psalm 51:5), God has provided a way (through Holy Baptism) for children to be cleansed from sin and forgiven. God also makes it clear in His Word that all children are precious and highly valued in His sight and are to be regarded as a blessing (Psalm 127; Matt. 19:14). Thus, the CTCR says in its report on “Human Sexuality”:
. . . . In the Christian tradition the child has been regarded as a blessing from God (Ps. 127:3-5; 128:3). . . Christian parents have reason to look upon the birth of a child from their union as an occasion to have this child brought into the divine family and to nourish it as it grows to spiritual maturity. They have God’s promise that He desires to have their child become an heir of eternal life and a member of His household through Holy Baptism. Theirs is the high privilege of joining in the common work of raising a child up in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, whose forgiveness enables us to live together in unselfish love toward each other.

Some of the more liberal protestants do not care. I’ve heard of some UCC churches and some UUA churches saying that pre-martial sex does not matter.

It’s a tough question, I don’t know of any legitimate Protestant denomination that allows rampant pre-marital sex. I know some of the more heterodox turn the other way when the people involved are in a “committed relationship” and there are some who obviously have no problem with homosexual acts…no comment.

The churches that I mentioned would fall in the last category.

hi. i do have a protestant friend who takes alot of grief for his stand on waiting till marriage. i dont know of any protestant churches that would espouse premarital sex, but with some of the mega churches with a feel good message(no pun intended!) it wouldnt suprise me. celebate myself, and i like it. my friend on the other hand has no problems waiting. hes prolife wanting to wait till marriage and only 19 years old. im 40, so i tell him how impressed i am with his descision and to heck with the nay sayers. what is a person missing out on if they wait? hmm lets see. unwanted pregnancy. venerial disease, guilt, feelings of worthlessness when your partner breaks up with you, because… you were not compatible?! waiting seems worth it to me. and at least one protestant i know. Peace:)

No Protestant group I am aware of teaches that premarital sex is OK. In fact most of them teach just the opposite. However, most Protestants also teach OSAS so sin of any kind is really not such a big deal. They believe they are already forgiven before they commit the sin.

It depends on the denomination, really, and sometimes the area where the church is. Some of the more conservative ones – Baptists or Wesleyans, for example – are very anti-pre-marital sex, while some of the more liberal denominations don’t truly advocate it but don’t neccessarily think it’s a bad thing, either. Clear as mud, I realize.

*There’s really no accoutability then. *

Most Protestants do not teach OSAS. Do the Math sometime. Add up the Anglicans, Methodist, Pentecostals, Church of Christ, Lutherans and then add up what Baptists do believe in OSAS.

Not to get off topic, but because Protestants also hold the heretical, man-made doctrine of Sola Fide, it creates the same attitude. Do whatever you want so long as you believe.

not necessarily. for all the biblical and doctrinal problems protestants may have, i dont believe this attitude is in evidence. aside from some of the more liberal churches, i think parents are very upfront about their opposition to premarital activity. especially in some of your stricter sects like the mennonites and such. many protestant churches also have dress codes and such meant to discourage such activities. although i dont think this approach works to well:shrug: but i just had to defend them on this one. and believe me i dont defend them on much:D Peace to you.

Umm… OSAS does not invalidate the magnitude of sin.
