1 Tim. 3:15 But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.
Hello Kepha,

This is the commonly referred to scripture I think you are looking for. Keep in mind that your friend is partially right in saying that the Holy Spirit guides individuals through inspiration bestowed through reading the scriptures. Through “actual grace” the Spirit is indeed present as they reflect on God’s Word and strive to find His will for their lives.

What narrows their interpretation concerns authentic doctrine regarding certain scriptures that belong solely to the successors of Peter to lawfully interpret. The parables and the Sermon on the Mount are open-ended, and have many hidden meanings that do not belong exclusively to “doctrinal matter” and may truly be the very vehicle to help a person form their conscience.

I would hope that you tread lightly with your friend, who is not all that wrong about being able to listen to the Spirit in his prayer. Just be aware of the difference concerning doctrinal matter. 🙂
