I come from a protestant background, so I’ve had the “sola scriptura” drilled into my head; please bear with me.

I was discussing with my brother the other day about the Communion of the Saints and he brought up a few questions that I hadn’t even thought of.
  1. When Catholics pray to the Saints, do the Saints talk back?
2)What is the point of Marian apparitions? In the bible, no one appeared to the living after they had died, and the only apparitions were by Jesus or Angels.

If you could shed some light on these two questions for me, I’d be extremely grateful.

Well I’m not sure about the first one, but in the bible I know Elias and Moses appeared with Jesus, so that is at least one time.

Also for your 2nd question… Didn’t John see a woman in heaven in Rev 12?

Peace,
Phil

After Blessed Theodore of Mukachevo had been martyred, Fr. Nicholas Muranyi and two others were attempting to decide whether to carry on with their ministry without their bishop. He appeared to all three in a dream and said “Brothers, go,” meaning that they should continue. Is that what you’re talking about?

I have never heard of saints talking back when we ask the saints to pray for us.

What do you mean by “what is the point of Marian apparitions?” The point is… whatever point Mary is trying to make when she appears. And yes, apparitions are Biblical - Elijah and Moses appeared to Jesus.

Yes they can, if God allows it.

Ask any Protestant if they’ve ever heard an angel speak to them and a good percentage of them will say yes. Ask if any of their departed relatives have ever spoken to them and again you’ll get a number of them who say yes.

The saints are in fact our departed relatives; they are also like the angels.

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 22:30[/BIBLEDRB]

With that said, be careful. Demons can also talk to us, so one should take any voice or locutions to a priest for vetting. If the voice or locution is heavenly, it is private revelation and so it is usually not meant to be shouted from the rooftops. I think formal ecclesiastical approval is necessary before publication of such a private revelation would be allowed.

I will say this about saints talking back to us. I went through a period of time where I prayed to St. Francis de Sales for intercession on a problem I was having with no solution I could see. I really needed some spiritual direction. Then one day, out of the blue, a thought popped into my head that was exactly the solution to my problem. It seems to me that God heard our prayers and allowed St. Francis to give me his advice. In that way, I consider that St. Francis talked to me.

For a person to be declared “a Saint” there is very stringent, direct and specific occurrences which must be discovered, which is why it generally takes many years for anyone to be declared a saint. One of those must be a miracle that is directly attributed to the person, before they are declared a saint. For instance, in prayer a family or individual may request a person who they believed to be Holy on earth, but who has died, to intercede on their behalf and petition from JESUS the favor of a healing. Now this healing must be of a nature such that the original disease is of record with the medical authorities, and the disease must of the nature of being incurable by medicine, e.g. medicine has failed or was not available for the disease. However, after praying there is an immediate cure, which the “doctors” declare as unexplainable in any medical terms - they can’t figure out why the patient was cured so quickly of such a dire disease.
In the above sense, yes the saints have indeed spoken to us through their actions on our behalf.

The apparitions of Mary have occurred, on average, once every 50 years since She left the earth, the first apparition was to St. James the Apostle when he was so discouraged with his then mission, and Her message to St. James and to us over the eons, has not changed, “believe in JESUS, love JESUS, trust in JESUS, do JESUS work, pray for JESUS intercession, honor JESUS…etc”. Her message is always to call us back to JESUS.

Just as in approving saints, there are very serious considerations which must be met in order for the Church to declare an apparition as valid, yes the Virgin Mary did come to earth and appear at this or that location. One of the most written about and verified was in Portugal at Fatima. Mary announced a miracle to be on a certain date, and many skeptics, journalists and non-believers were present when the miracle occurred, and it was well written about and document and those articles are available or discovery as they have been archived.
A second very well documented apparition was in Mexico where the serape of Juan Diego is still available for review. In this apparition She was called the Lady of Guadalupe and She appeared pregnant and convinced the Indians to stop sacrificing their babies. A scientific review of the image She left on Juan Diego’s cape - which although being made of reeds, has never deteriorated - revealed through a microscopic analysis the picture of a kneeling Juan Diego as reflected in the pupil of each of Her eyes in this image.

Also for your research I would suggest you review the apparition that is being reported in Medjugore, which according to all reports has been continuing for almost 10 years and is being reported as the last of Her visits before Her SON, JESUS returns - which is why the apparition is supposedly lasting so long. This apparition is NOT supported by the local Catholic Bishop as being true, but that same position was likewise assumed by the Bishop at Fatima originally as well. In this apparition the Virgin Mary, if She is appearing, has advised that She will leave an indestructible sign when the apparition ends, as proof. So, we need to each decide on our own how to approach this apparition and then wait for the sign, if it comes. One test is the messages She leaves, which still point to coming back, returning to, believing in and loving Her SON, JESUS - the same message She has always been teaching and pleading with us to observe and live.

Hope this helps.

In private revelations to Anne, a lay Apostle, several saints have spoken. Check this at directionforourtime.com. Anne has several books published that record these quotes. Personally, I have spoken to several of my deceased relatives. I have never had a vocal response, but they have answered me in ways that leave no doubt that this is the answer to my request.

When Mary appears to children, she stresses repentance. She puts great emphasis on the prayers of the rosary.

My saints have helped me and given me answers to prayers in ways I’ve never expected, never imagined. I won’t go into details, but a few of them have spoken to me, at different times throughout the years. A few I’ve seen, some I’ve only heard their voice. It was never something I asked for and it always seemed to come out of the blue, but I’m so grateful to God for giving me these precious gifts!

take care,
amsjj 🙂

Can I have a reference for this please Thanks!

My question about the Marian apparitions was twofold: WHY does MARY appear to us, and also a general “why would ANY saint appear to us because no one appeared after their death in the bible”.

My brother has many objections to the Catholic Church but seems unwilling to post any of his questions on here. Often times, the questions are good and I want the answer too.

So, could a demon appear as Mary or another saint? That seems to be my brother’s biggest objection with apparitions from Mary. He believes that it is most likely a demon who is trying to lead us away from God and that there were no apparitions in the bible by anyone (other than Jesus) after their death. He said that he thinks that the demon might say stuff which sound biblical (and probably is) just to gain our trust and then they can slowly start to lead us off the road to God.

I told him I think he gives more credit to demons than he does God. I think it is more likely (and am MUCH more willing to believe) that God is sending Mary to deliver a simple message than a demon to appear in the form of someone as holy as Mary, tell us biblical things to follow God, and continue to do this over time just so they can slowly start to divert us from God someday down the road.

Theoretically, I think so. Much more likely than a demon, of course, is the chance that a purported “visionary” is lying to get attention, or simply had a very vivid (but non-miraculous) dream and mistook it out of piety for an apparition.

As Catholics, however, we do not have to investigate and pass judgment on these questions individually. The Church investigates (plausible) apparitions, and has never approved any apparition as credible that was not completely consistent with the Scriptures and Church teaching. Likewise, I don’t have to investigate Mother Teresa’s life to determine whether I think she was holy and is now in Heaven; the Church’s process of canonization establishes this and adjudges her to be worthy of veneration as a saint. If your brother asked “but how can you know that she didn’t commit a mortal sin right before she died and is now in Hell?”, the answer is that as Catholics we have the Church (which we of course see as founded by Christ and led by his vicar on Earth through unbroken succession from the Apostles), not individual inquiry, to answer those questions.

And for what it’s worth, apparitions are not considered a part of the deposit of the faith, and even ones judged by the Church to be credible need not be believed by any person.

1./ The saints definitely ‘talk back’’ by events resulting from their intersection. Those can be miraculous (necessary for the canonization) or others which can be explained also by natural processes. St Joan of Arc believed that Saint Catherina talked to her, some other saints too, so such thing is possible

2./ According to be Bible Enoch and Elias will come back at the end of the time. They were taken with their body. It is part of the Catholic faith that Mary is in the heaven with her body (dogma of Assumption) so the apparitions of Mary (in body) is possible. The point of the apparitions is to change someone’s life, or to have an influence over the word. The apparition in Lourdes approved the dogma of Immaculate Conception, other apparition urge prayers.

I think pretty much you first question has been answered.

As for your second question, yes, the demon could appear as such. The demon could plant 99 truths to squeeze in one falsehood. And this is why the CC takes very good care to investigate reported Marian apparitions. And I trust the CC because it has been doing these for 2000 years and has a good track record. I think one such criteria is that it does not contradict Church teaching. And if such apparition causes disobedience, dissension, goes contrary to the Church and the Magisterium and the deposit of faith, then the CC will know it is not from God.

So, if I were to be graced with a visitation from Mary, then I should immediately bring it up to the local priest so that he could help discern if it was really from God or from a demon?

I TOTALLY know where you’re coming from. On top of that, my Dad taught me to be critical of everything. I have a Sola Scriptura background, but I’m even critical of the Bible. It makes things tough, but it also forces me to really delve into topics.

Anyway, good luck with your move towards the Church. I’m not quite ready to join, but I’m positive it’s the right place to be.

Yes, he will be able to advise you accordingly.
