Do some women wear the veil to feel superior or more holy compared to others?

I am just wondering if anyone here in the trad forum has encountered this attitude. In my church, which is a regular old NO parish, we have one family who veils. They are very involved in the music program and very traditional. However, they didn’t start wearing the veils until recently, and while I don’t want to diss their veiling, it seems as if the women of this family do this to be superior to the rest of us. I say this because they are very important people in our church and are nose in the air type people (though i’ll admit they do have a strong faith). So is this a common attitude? Do a lot of women who veil do so to feel that they are holier or better than those that don’t? I would think it isn’t a common attitude, but who knows

None of the women Ive met who veil have an attitude like that. I suppose a small minority might, but I dont think very many.
 
No you do it because it’s a sign of humility, and it’s a sign Our Lord is in the tabernacle.

I’ve been veiling since Lent of 2009 , and I’m not self-righteous about it, but people have accused me of it. My veiling hasn’t been received well at Cursillo, either. It has been a cross.I think it’s important not to assume that these women are being self-righteous. Judging from external appearances can be very bad, both for you and those whom you judge.

One simple way to counteract this is to ask them why they chose to veil. Be tactful and kind, of course, so you don’t put them on the defensive. Their answer and demeanor in answering will tell you.

One last thing I’d add is that my veiling has also had positive responses, which I’m very grateful for and I the negatives have not deterred me. 😃
 
Please accept that wearing a veil is an act of personal piety, and that the personal motivations of women wearing veils isn’t really our concern and should not be subjected to our petty judgments.

I know. Trust me I assume the attitude i describe is not common. However in my parish it seems like it. This family is front and center singing at church and it almost does seem like a sideshow. It’d be one thing if they weren’t front and center. I will say though these people are probably the 2 or 3 percent who MIGHT feel that way. As I said maybe they don’t. Its just the fact that they are the only ones who do. I’ll also add that its a small rural parish and they are one of the more prominent families

Agreed, None of us can read hearts or minds, nor, should we try.

So what exactly would you have this family, who are involved and active in your parish and in the music of it, do when they feel they ought to wear veils out of respect for Our Lord in the tabernacle? Do you want them to be kicked out of the singing? Do you want them to move to the back of the church? Are you aware that, when one has children, being up in the front where they can see is very important?

You use the word “sideshow” to describe a family who are active in your parish and wish to show humility before the tabernacle? Because they are the only ones who feel obliged to show extra humility before Our Lord, you impute motives of pride to them? That seems unkind and uncharitable to me. Am I wrong? Do you know more about these people’s motives than you have mentioned in your post, where you admit, albeit grudgingly, that they might NOT be proud about it?
 
Though I have never seen it myself, it is *theoretically *possible that someone’s outward sign of piety was a sign of a prideful spirit. However, would you say the same thing, for example of someone who makes sure they always genuflect before the tabernacle or who make the required sign of reverence before receiving Communion even if most around them are casual about it? :rolleyes: If not, perhsps it is a resistance to the traditional ways that is coloring your perception.

Well since it is not really something you can’t do either, why not join them so that they cannot think of themselves as superior? 😃

Read her bio, she quit her job because she could not protect her clients money in the stock market after she realized its a sham. She quit paying taxes so she will not have to answer to Our Lord on judgement day on why she participated in genocide of the unborn.

Are we able to look into the hearts of others? Love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Whether they are sincere in their outward display of love for the Lord is not for a neighbor to judge.

In other words, why does it bother you?
 
I wouldn’t worry about it, since God reads all of our hearts, they’ll receive their reward, as you will receive yours:)

Women wear “a” veil because they like that particular form of head covering.

Women wear “the” veil because it is part of their religious habit.

I regularly recieve our Blessed Lord on the tongue while kneeling at my local NO mass and I can say that I rarely ever feel the temptation of pride when doing so. In fact, it’s much more common for me to experience fear and distress when recieving my Lord on my knees because I am one of the few there who recieves our Lord in this manner and I’m afraid of what others might think.

That said, showing reverence before the blessed sacrament is much more important then my feelings, or what other people might think! 🙂
 
I hope nobody feels this way about me. I’m a new convert and feel a strong pull to veil in mass. My mobility is so limited that I can’t genuflect or even properly bow. I would love to kneel in prayer. Veiling is something I can do for God. I am the only person other than the occasional visiting nun who wears something over her hair.

I hope the family is not meaning to be prideful, but at the same time I wonder if they are one of those families that come across as Martha Stewart - impossibly close to perfectly put together so annoying in perfection that it gets Satans spirit up. Even so, if they are, it is our responsibility to squash the head of the snake and check our attitude with our siblings in Christ. God must work his will and peace in all of us, one at a time.
