It is not illegal per se, but, it is censored.

I know of at least two English-speaking expat Catholic Churches in Shanghai. Both are in union with Rome. They’re served by Irish missionary priests. I think the government is more lenient with expats than with Chinese nationals regarding freedom to practice Catholicism.

Wow, and to think it wasn’t so long ago that they barred the Bishop of Shanghai from returning to the country. Great to know we’re making progress.

Okay better question, do the Chinese people at least know how it used to be?

I believe that the majority of the chinese people may not even know anything about christianity in general. The effects of communism are still felt in many parts of china particularly in the more rural areas. I know a catholic family that moved to china as part of a mission family that told me that most people have no idea.

I’m sure they are keenly aware. There is an underground church there as well.
