My daughter’s in laws who were Pentecostal, have gone back to what they determine is the real early church that Jesus established.
They have become Messianic Jews.

They are extremely anti-Catholic, and truly believe all what the Boettner book teaches about paganism entering the early church.

I would like to point them to any one of the Apostolic churches.

Since they are so Anti-Catholic, I don’t’ think I could point them to the Catholic church, but I think there might be a chance they might be open to the Eastern Orthodox church.
I think that would be contingent on whether the Eastern Orthodox believe that the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit are still around, like tongues, prophesy, miracles and such.

Do any of the Eastern churches believe this?

Like with each major tradition, there are those who say Yea and those who say Nay. I don’t know what their patriarchs say. Maybe I’ll ask over at orthodoxchristianity.net

Most of the gifts of the Holy Spirit which pentecostal protestants claim benefit them are not accepted in such an obvious way by the churches that call themselves Orthodox or Eastern Catholic.

I admit myself that I do not understand these gifts very well.
I know of one Melkite priest who spoke in tongues in the 70’s when he was part of a charismatic movement and he does not think of it as unusual but does not seem to consider it to be profoundly important either.

Yeah, that seems to be the consensus over at orthodoxchristianity.net

The one area of interpretation that would probably turn off the Messianic Jews mentioned is that for the most part, Orthodox interpret glossolalia as speaking KNOWN, but unlearned, languages. That’s definitely not the usual experience of Pentecostals (it happens, but is rare). The Orthodox also don’t consider that movement a particularly new or special movement, which would undoubtedly hurt the pride of charismatics! 😃

One of them said this Orthodox group could be considered “charismatic,” and that they retain a valid ordination. He didn’t think highly of it, however. Take that for what it’s worth.

Whateever differences are had on this idea of the Holy Spirits gifts it must not be too bothersome. The Charismatic Episocopal Churches are converting to Western Rite Orthodoxy in large numbers, including advertising in my own newspaper to become Orthodox. I only wish there was a way that they could be part of a more traditional Latin Catholic or Eastern Catholic Church too. I dont think Rome takes much interest in them however. Whereas the Orthodox court them quite personally and directly. It’s a whole different ethos and culture which sadly for the Catholics seems to work to the Orthodox advantage. Whatever is Gods will is God’s will. I often feel I should join them.

Most of the time that seems to be the case. I’ve rarely run into seriously hostile responses to charismatic ideas in any tradition. The worst reaction seems to be “these folks are sincere but shallow. They just need to encounter the real depth of our tradition, which doesn’t need more signs-and-wonders-and-whatnot.”

I am quite surprised to hear this. Could you provide a link to more info? In general, the response I’ve seen from Orthodox has been more along the lines of the above negative response. Whereas charismatic Catholics have large, active, influential bastions in the United States. There’s Christ the King in Michigan, where my wife grew up, many charismatic prayer groups among hispanics, and even a forum just for people who write Catholic charismatic newsletters! I would think there’d be quite a base to reach out to disappointed Episcopalians.

Can’t hurt to visit and say hi. It’s always good for Christians to connect, even if we can’t “commune.”

Yes theres a lot of LATIN catholic NOT Eastern Catholic charismatic groups. This is because Latin Catholic laity is in the recent decades always far more influenced by Protestants than most Orthodox are…concerning theology in particular.

Orthodox Church may not have a magisterium, may be schismatic, may have acceptance of a few liberal heresies like contraception in the USA but it still is living in a different world than the west. For now.

I did visit this Church thats becoming Latin rite Orthodox. It is a very healthy parish as far as I can tell. They apparently did not represent much of the charismatic part of the “CEC” however. The whole reason CEC people are becoming Orthodox and Catholic is because the charismatic part of their church did not in itself prevent great abuses in their hierarchy from occuring. These gifts of the holy spirit in some extremely obvious form are not the be all and end all to holiness and salvation.

As for the western rite CEC Orthodox conversion. These three sites are the primary ones. if you look on google theres a few more around

catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=26148 At least a few are also becoming Catholic but moreso as individuals not entire churches. (once again different church cultures at work for better and for worse)

I am have met in person and talked with with both Fr. Patrick Cardine and Antiochian Bishop Thomas who are featured onsome these broadcasts. They appear to be fine holy people.
