Not only my Patriarch, but yours as well! A string of Popes were appointed by emperors. The problem for you is that Catholic sources do not address some of these more troubling historical facts about the Papacy, so you feel comfortable batting at the Orthodox over it.Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t the Eastern Emperor choose your patriarch?
You don’t score any points for that one, sorry.
I believe you are referring to Saint Photios, a brilliant scholar and evangelist of Eastern Europe.Wasn’t some of them promoted from lay person to Patriarch in about two weeks or so (early early Church history)???
Actually, as you know, any layperson could be elected Pope (well, male layperson) who is otherwise qualified.
That means that man would quickly have all of the orders conferred upon him. I believe Pope saint Celestine V went through just such a process, as a monk (very meek, humble and holy) I don’t believe he was even a priest at the time. There may have been others.
This comment does not follow the argument. But you would never say that he wasn’t a Bishop? A bad priest doesn’t invalidate a sacrament, otherwise all of us are in trouble
