Do the Orthodox really think this about Catholic devotion to Mary?

Catholics accept that there is such things as private revelation. They believe that Mary does indeed can reveal herself to people still living, apparitions for example. That is a basic belief about private revelation with regard to Mary and there is little that Catholics can dissent.

What every Catholic must be aware of is that not all private revelations can be authentic. They are mindful of that and the Vatican’s standard of authenticating is even higher. In other word, Catholics are not obligated to believe purported apparitions as authentic, though they may do so if the revelation message has a common them, like exhorting them to pray. I think which is basically said in this thread.

I hope you can see the difference.

Not that private revelation does not happen. The saints and many Catholics did receive them throughout history. Paul’s vision of the Lord on the way to Damascus was a private revelation and obviously an authentic one.

I live right down the street from an Orthodox Church. The people there have been really nice to me and I went through their Catechism. I was under the mistaken belief that they were in communion with us. It was what a neighbor told me. I like their lunches on Sunday which are open to the public and I wanted to make friends. I learned a lot about them. There is definitely some kind on animosity which they have to Catholics. This view is not reflective of the local priest. However, he must maintain the status quo. When I told them I would not promise to never attend Catholic Mass again as a condition of converting, the priest advised me not to convert. They really do not want to hear about Marian Apparitions and they limit my getting involved too much unless I convert. What made me really sad is that when I loaned them all of my books about Marian Apparitions, they were all thrown in the trash. It might have been some mistake or misunderstanding, but it was very painful to me. The local priest has apologized on the part of some of the parish members. Some of them keep asking me when I will convert and it is kind of strange. I am not sure what I should convert to. We are really the same church in Gods’s eyes but if I say that many of them hit the ceiling.

We do recognize her as Queen of Heaven, as is representative in some iconography. We just don't make mention of this within the church life as much as our Western counterparts because we just have a different emphasis, such as how the West emphasizes the Passion of Christ, while we emphasize more the glorified Christ (see our Pascha hymn how He has trampled death by death)

I don’t know, in my experience, the Liturgy of St. John Chyrsostom venerates the Theotokos far more than the Liturgy of Blessed Paul VI, which might mention her twice, almost in passing, at most. And since the Divine Liturgy is the heart of church life…yeah…“more honorable than the cherubim, more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim” indeed.

At most, honestly, all I’ve heard negatively from the Orthodox regarding Latin Catholic veneration of the Theotokos is a rejection of the Immaculate Conception teaching.

while there are many opinions about Mary the Mother of God, one thing of which i am certain, there is no creature closer to God than our Mother Mary.

as near as i can recall, only one time in the new testament did Mary give anyone her opinion. that is when at the marriage feast at Cana she said, “do as He says.” an interesting fact about this is that she said this even though the Son of God had already objected to her about His doing anything.

take it for what it is worth, but seeking Mary’s intercession is, in my humblest opinion, one of the wisest things any follower of Jesus can do.
