Do you all know the ‘Great O’s’? They are the 7 Antiphons to the Magnificat during Vespers, the last week before Christmas Eve. It goes way back, perhaps 6th or 7th century, and of course coming out of the monastic tradition.
The O’s are:
December 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom)
December 18: O Adonai (O Lord)
December 19: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse)
December 20: O Clavis David (O Key of David)
December 21: O Oriens (O Dayspring)
December 22: O Rex Gentium (O King of the nations)
December 23: O Emmanuel (O With Us is God)
And of course that is where the hymn ‘O Come, O Come Emanuel’ is derived. If you haven’t heard the Great O’s chanted, it is stunningly beautiful. It send chills up and down me.
I may be able to find a recording of just one of the antiphons for you to listen to. Here it is. So the antiphon comes before the Magnificat and then after, as, of course, they all do. Enjoy.
