Veni Veni Emmanuel is an example of an excellent hymn, limited range, simple words, modest tempo.

The congregation doesn’t have to have great singers in order for it to sound like something, even if the church doesn’t have an organ to accompany.

Our parish sings a jacked up version of it probably taken from Matt Maher’s radio version
Starting off traditional and then throwing in some out of place lyrics in the middle .

Adding a new tempo and these lyrics.

Rejoice, again I say rejoice
For unto us is born
The Savior of the world
Take heart, O weary soul, take heart
For help is on it’s way and Holy is His Name.

At the risk of sounding like the world’s biggest curmudgeon, my answer is yes, we sing it. Every single Sunday during Advent. Over and over and over again until I just want to scream. I used to like it. Now I just cringe.
Now I OTOH never hear it at the parish I attend until the last Sunday of Advent, IF then (last year it was not sung at all).

But we do "on Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry’ until I"M the one who wants to cry!

I’m sick of it after the 1st Sunday of advent. I like the song, but they used it as Entrance hymn. Then the melody for the Sanctus, the Profession of Faith, the Great Amen, and the Agnus Dei.

On the daily mass it’s not used as entrance but at all other times during the mass :crying:

They’ve used it at every mass done by our pastor since that 1st Sunday.

On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, at twelve noon the church bells of the local congregational church sounded the first two verses and the refrain of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
It was absolutely pleasant to listen to.

We are singing it next weekend along with “O Come, Divine Messiah” and “Christ, Circle Round Us” since the O Antiphons begin on December 17th.

We have not sung it yet this Advent. “People Look East” seems to be the go-to hymn this year. Not my favorite, especially when it is not sung in the proper tempo. 😦

I sang it for the first time this Advent when I cantored at Mass today. Interestingly, I sang “People, Look East” and “O Come Divine Messiah,” too.

We sang it as our preparation hymn today. Another one of my favorites is People look East which was our recessional hymn today.

Some members of the choir were complaining about the lack of breaths in this song. I told them what a former director of mine once told us all - “Breathe AFTER rehearsal!”

It’s one of those hymns played in a minor key and that can get bland after a while.

That said, at the FSSP Mass tonight it was the entrance song (in Latin) and recessional (in English).

We sing “O Come…” every year, at weekend masses the follow the 16th of December, when it is most appropriate to sing the O Antiphons. This year we used it as the recessional hymn.
