Do they still bless throats at your parish?

mass this morning was celebrated by our parish priest and he had sore throat. after mass he sought the intercession of st. blaise, today’s saint and prayed over each parishioner for throat healing. wonderful tradition. i remember he did it also last year.🙂
God bless.

The five parishes closest to my house do not bless throats, but a group of Capuchins who run a soup kitchen and homeless shelter do. Anybody who wants their throat blessed just gets in line behind the homeless guys at the shelter chapel.

Yes! I went for it after the regular morning OF Mass on Tuesday 🙂

I had to have my tonsils out in November as a 27-year-old 😛 I’m looking forward to a better throat this year 😉

Yes, my parish blessed the candles today during the Mass of the Presentation of Jesus (“Candlemas”) and they will be used tomorrow to bless the throats.
We did both, too, at the OF parish I attend.

Ouch! Too bad about the tonsils. I have chronic throat problems so I try not to miss the blessing of St Blaise. Sometimes I’ve traveled up to 50 miles to get my throat blessed every year. This is one tradition I am not willing to give up easily because it always brings me relief.

St Blaise, pray for us!

Yes, we do! And the parish is one of the more ‘progressive’ types, too. I would have expected that they wouldn’t have the blessing of the throats, that it was ‘old-fashioned,’ or something. But it was after Mass and many people attended. The priest gave a brief talk about it beforehand. Real nice.

Ours talked about it, too. I really love that. I learn that way, and it makes things even more meaningful.

You all are lucky – Or should I say “blessed”?

Though (as I noted above) my parish imparted the blessing this morning, I was too sick to go! :crying:
I had a monster cold last week, and either the lingering effects of that, or the cold medicine made me too sleepy to attend. So I am still “cursed” with the last manifestation of that cold – laryngitis!
Blessedly, as in years past, my parish bestowed the blessing again after this morning’s Masses. A general blessing at the end of Mass, and individual blessings for anyone who chose to linger afterward.

(My persisting laryngitis and I stuck around for the individual blessing 👍 )

Yes, our parish does. They blessed throats at the 7:30 A.M. Mass, and then at an 11:00 prayer service for the school kids. I couldn’t make it to the Mass, but I went to the 11:00 o’clock.
These days they use unlighted candles, but when I was in grade school (way back in B.C.–Before the Council) the candles used to be lit. That was always a thrill–having lighted candles placed on either side of your head!

yes they did it at our parish, but unfortunately i was unable to go because they only did it at the normal morning Mass at 8am, and i was in class. and with state mandated attendance policy resulting in auto fail if you miss more than 10% of a class i couldnt skip.

Hi,

Yes, in my parish, they have after each Mass. I live in Baltimore, MD.

Yes, after Mass today.🙂 I feel better now, I tohught I’d missed that because I couldn’t get to the Chapel on the feast of St. Blaise.

Not with our current pastor (whom we all dearly love!) 👍

Nor with the pastor before our current pastor.

But the pastor before the last one before our current pastor, we had it done a couple of years in a row. With him, we had the annual blessing of the animals, too.

Hi, RedRoseTea!

Yes, at the Feast of St. Blaise at various parishes in Texas…

Honestly you probably need to ask for it at your parish if they don’t do it there. It’s pretty simple and your priest is probably willing to do it.

Though it is not ‘my’ parish, since I am not a Christian, I often go to St. Hugo’s with my spouse’s very Catholic family, and indeed that church does it up in style! The Priest has the children come up and tells them the tale of St. Blaise, brings out the reliquary to show them all, blesses those of all ages with it, anoints the sick on the feast day, and the whole ball of wax.

It’s a fairly charming church, with an excellent staff - I’m just glad I don’t have to be the dude who changes the lightbulbs in there (the rigging just looks like it’d be crazy-dangerous!), and yes, I would wish for more traditional music, though there is some now and then. I may not be of your faith, but that doesn’t mean I am either tasteless or necessarily irreverent! 🙂
