Do U ENJOY the music at your church?

I enjoy almost any music at Mass.

I like almost all of the hymns, both traditional and contemporary. There are a few that are lower down on my “favorite” list, but I don’t hate them.
 
I went to a different parish today with a question on my mind,
and in fact prayed for insight there in church right before Mass started.
Then came the first notes of the opening hymn …
a song I hadn’t heard in years but used to play all the time in parades
when I was in marching band at a different point in my life.
Tears came streaming down my face on hearing the music at church today,
because my prayer for insight was immediately answered then and there.

Depends on who’s singing 😉

I’ve heard singers knock you out into a deep state of REM sleep. I have also heard singers sing the same hymns and make it sound beautiful and enjoyable.
 
I am extremely lucky that my parish has several different Masses with different music at each.

There is a Life Teen Mass with band and youth music. There is a contemporary Mass with guitars and Glory and Praise Music. There is a ‘choir mass’ with Gregorian chant and ‘classic’ music. So I am usually at the choir mass and enjoying the music. Once or twice I have had to attend at the other times and I can say that while I did not exactly enjoy in the same way, the music was actually very well done and was theologically ‘sound’. I mean, just because I don’t particularly care for what our dear departed Brotherhrolf called "a pickin’ and a grinnin’’ style, it was not ‘amped up’, it wasn’t done like rock bands, it wasn’t over the top loud or full of ‘the Church of ME’. . .I could see that for people who liked the style this music would help induce for them a truly prayerful focus on GOD, and not a self-focused look AWAY from God.

Of course I spent nearly 40 years at parishes where the music was breathtakingly awful, so I know what ‘barely tolerate’ means.

Take heart! Parishes all over are beginning to ‘come round’ to what Vatican II was aiming for: Gregorian chant with pride of place, and music which is SACRED in nature and appropriate for liturgy. We will all be able to appreciate music at Mass one day, no matter what kind of ‘style’ we prefer as a whole.
 
I love the music at our EF parish but barely tolerate the music at the local OF parish.
 
I can barely tolerate it at the parish I attended while in high school. The organist from that time period resigned, and has now passed away. The current organist, who, oddly enough, sang in a choir under his direction, which did excellent pieces of a more “traditional” sort, including chant, and pieces like the Mozart requiem, now plays things that sound like they would be better suited to a non denominational “praise and worship” setting. Most of those who sang in the choir under the first organist have either died, or dropped out of the choir, sometimes even switching parishes because they don’t care for the current organist’s choice of music.
 
Most of it is okay, but I do not like some of the choices used for the processional and recessional. I’d rather not sing about the birds and the mountains and the water and the “cerulean sky” in church, even if it does pay homage to God, in an indirect way.
 
Nothing against the music director or the choir, but I guess I tolerate it… sometimes I like it… I like when parishes use Gregorian chant or polyphony 🙂 anything classical like that.
 
I love the music at my regular mass. We are lucky to have several masses with different styles and choirs. 🙂
 
I go to EF mass and love the music.

I find the songs too Protestant. For the life of me, I cannot understand how the Shaker song “Lord of the Dance” is considered appropriate. The Shakers were a cult. Once the piano player entertained the congregation with “Somewhere In Time”. Lovely but in Church? Before Mass? I have yet to hear one Catholic hymn including the Ave Maria.
 
In mid-November there will be changes to music at Catholic Masses when the new Liturgy takes place.

This is stated on the USCCB web site. Music must be approved.

Unfortunately, I have no further info at this time.
 
ANNE, can you link to a statement that says music must be approved?
 
I enjoy it, although I wish we’d use the Anthology more than going back to the old sets. There’s a reason our synod recommended the new book.
 
I can not really answer this question as I have never really thought about it.

I do not go to Church (Liturgy) for the purpose of enjoyment.
 
I think we have a wonderful music program. Besides my kids sing in the choir. 😃
