I am reminded of a story I heard Fr. Corapi tell about St. Theresa of Avila. It seems she was traveling somewhere in bad weather, and a wheel came off her carriage and dropped her in a ditch, or some such thing. According to the story, she looked up and said, “Lord, if this is how You treat Your friends, it is no wonder You have so few of them.”

Sometimes (like when I’ve dropped the same item three times in 15 seconds) I pray, “Lord, are You having fun with me again? Don’t You have better things to do, like running the universe?”
🙂 thanks for sharing that.

I just wanted to share with everyone that I prayed deeply last night…cried…just talked to God through the Rosary…asked Mary to pray for me…it was a moving experience. I have had moving Rosary ‘sessions’ before, but last night was a surrendering of this evil spirit that creeps along side of me now and then, and tempts me to think badly. Thanks for your insights everyone…you’re all wonderful people to know.:grouphug:

God can be like a girlfriend. He only tortures you because he loves you.

Don’t forget that other people can be part of God’s plan to help you out. And sometimes, it helps if you ask them. 🙂

I know this sounds stupid, but it sometimes helps to fight the worries, if you train yourself to think about something else when your thoughts get out of control. Pray. Go run. Scrub the dishes really hard. Anything to get out of that rut of unhelpful thought.

God will always give you more than you can handle

But never more than He can handle.

God never gives us more than we can bear because he bears things with us. It’s a matter of trust. I wonder if you’r familiar with the story (or was it a poem?) “Footprints in the Sand”? The author was walking with our Lord along the beach. There were always two sets of footprints throughout his life except for the times when he had difficulties. He then asked our Lord why He left him to walk alone when he was most in need. Our Lord’s answer: “I did not leave you… It was then that I carried you!”
👍

great ideas! I have found that praying the Rosary tremendously helps…the devil doesn’t like when we pray.👍

yes–I love that poem…I have it imprinted on a picture somewhere packed away still.😊 In praying the Rosary, I truly felt the Holy Spirit speaking to me…saying…‘that your cross is not beared alone,’ and that my fears of loss from when I was a child, build up when I allow the devil to tempt me to think negative thoughts.

I then feel guilt when thinking of people in the world…who have far less than us Americans. I so want to help them…and I want God to help me to help others…I think when I take the focus of life OFF OF ME, I tend to have a far more peaceful existence. Ya know?

My own things aside, what about possessions? Those folks need the authority of Christ as help to get them from under it. Not something they can handle themselves. What about insanity? Ever been in an adult behavioral unit of a hospital? Do those folks bear problems by themselves? Tim

I was a volunteer in such a ward once – it is arguable whether the patients are actually “bearing” their problems at all.

Maybe God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, but other people certainly do…
Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher, said, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.”.
I’d really love to see Nietzsche say that to the face of a battered wife or a child victim of sexual abuse.

I have often thought though that those who are not mentally well, or emotionally well even, are unable to play the blame game like some of us can…when life becomes hard. My own mother suffered from depression, and when I think back to her life, she seemed to not always know what she was doing or saying–mainly because she was medicated. So, for her to think that God handed her too much, she just wasn’t altogether capable if you will, of thinking that. I know that I can sometimes feel burdened…but I sometimes makes the mistake of wondering if God is helping me through this. Through prayer, I get over it, so to speak…but, if I were not well mentally, maybe I wouldn’t be aware of my circumstances…as they relate to God? Does that make sense?

That does make sense. It’s interesting, because in my experience, depression has caused more questioning of whether God has handed a person too much. Then again, medications for depression now are much more advanced than they were, so a person on medication might experience far fewer [unwanted] side effects (such as not being as aware of certain questions).

Yes, It makes alot of sense and probably applies to alot of people with mental illness. But I’m not crazy,😃 , disturbed at times, very much so. Meds do not help me, they don’t make much difference at all. I take 5 meds a morning just to cover the possibilities. I have gone off of them for months at a time with no change. It only messes with my sleep schedule. I had to go to different Dr.s because I could not get a straight diagnosis. I’ve even had a brain scan for tumors because of my cancer history. But, I take my meds, see the Dr. and a therapist so no one worries. My therapist is a christian. She really likes to hear me talk and I think she is starting to learn.🙂 I always present a new challenge to her that will draw her to learn more about the Catholic faith. Its good for both of us.
I’m not “doped”. I’m very aware of my circumstances and how it relates to God. Granted, I learn something new every day. I know God loves me, I know I’ve gotten myself into trouble. I know Gods mercy is more then my sins and He is forgiving. I know what I have been through is my own doing and nessessary. It took alot to break me, I was a very determined person. My mentor, who is in the 20th SF as an E8 Master Sgt, called me a hard charger and gave me a recommendation to the CO of my LRS Ranger unit I was in out of MD. I was a stud, or thought I was 😃 . God crushed me, turned my world upside down and He was right in doing it. My soul was dieing or dead. The unbearable was nessessary. I still don’t like it and have to deal with it every day. The more I learn, the more I realize it’s beyond me to grasp all the angles. God has presented a custom fit challenge nessesary for me to have a chance at salvation. Nothing special. Just fitting and just. Tim
