Do Video Games Influence one's Morality

Propaganda only works when you lose the ability to reason. Which is why today’s Journalism is full of half truths, you can’t make a reasonable decision regarding something when you only have part of the information. Which is also why I never buy anything the media says at first glance.
 
I play video games occasionally and I can tell you that they have never influenced me to do anything bad or wrong. They haven’t influenced my morality in anyway, either. I’d imagine that in cases where people are influenced by video games they most likely have some psychological issues.

The only point I’m trying to make here is using the Church as a guild and forming your conscience with docility towards her teaching, is not going to let you decided just because you heard something repeated in secular society ad nauseum you should believe it too.
 
Slightly off topic. I have thought it would be amusing to start a thread debating the morality of female human and Asari marriage in Mass Effect 😉

Propaganda works in two ways.
  1. The worst way. It presents some factual information and then combines it with information that is false.
  2. It is entirely false but presented as truth, very often.
Anyone can reason, but the problem is this: I often have to do my own research regarding certain subjects brought up here constantly. This means looking up credible sources, including the Catholic Church. And depending on the subject, multiple credible sources.

All media paints a picture in our minds about what is OK, average and acceptable. A friend showed me a videogame he bought. In one scene, his screen character passes a fully clothed woman lying on an ancient style bed or sofa. Next to the bed is a stand with a vase on it. The “camera” stops moving but it is clear that the male character has decided to take a break from his adventure. You see the vase beginning to wobble and female moaning sounds as the vase wobbles even more violently until it falls and hits the floor. Then his screen character continues his adventure.

Oh yes, we needed that scene. I have not and will never buy a computer game or play a free one like that.

For some people yes, for others no.

Same goes for pretty much any influence.

That is pretty darn PG compared to what happens in movies 🙂 Not saying its O.K. for everyone but I’d find it more comedy than sexual. Maybe that is part of being married for over a decade, but I’ve seen way “worse” in movies, games and read worse in books. It does nothing for me on any sort of sensual/lust/possible sin level. That’s where every one is called to be judge of their own soul and not judge other people based on there own failings.

Well, that’s good. Never trust any media.

Propaganda works when you are not aware of what is going on. If you are not “paranoid” you might find yourself agreeing with ideas that are not even your own.

This isn’t about judging other people. This is about the culture we live in. As a media professional myself, all creative people will be called to give an account for all they did when they die. All of us will.

So, as Catholics, we need to deny culture that is sinful and presents immorality as “entertainment” and uphold what is good and clean. As creative people, we must create works that have virtue, not immorality. Creative people have a duty to create a culture that does not lower moral standards.
