Are you a new Catholic, somoene thinking about becoming a Catholic, a Catholic who did not attend religious education growing up, or ???

Because this is a pretty basic teaching that you should know. You should know that the Catholic Church does not teach that priests have “magical powers”.

Frankly your comment above is rude and out of line.

I went to communion, confirmation, and a catholic high school. I swear I’ve just recently discovered this idea. I learned nothing in Sunday school. I did not know Jesus and God are considered the same guy until I read the Da Vinci Code. My church always said Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God, so I always thought different guys but people always call Jesus God.

Back to the magic powers thing; A priest is a man like any other man. He does not have powers greater than me. Jesus could turn a cracker into flesh but not my local priest. My local priest, with a drinking problem who has questionable relationships with drug addicted homosexuals in my city does not gain powers, sacramental or otherwise, when he was ordained.

I think I’m skeptical the older I get to believe in the supernatural. I’m probably losing my faith.

The Eucharist is Jesus “Under the appearance of bread and wine” as some said. This makes more sense to me.

I get confused because if a priest turned the bread into a different substance like the flesh of a man we could test this and see that its composition is different.

Jesus is present in the Eucharist itself like he is present in all things. Am I getting close to understanding?

Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is completely unlike His presence in Creation.

When Christ takes on the appearances of bread and wine, they are no longer bread and wine, but they are Christ, but they have the molecular composition of bread and wine - the spiritual substance has changed from being bread and wine to being Christ.

Christ’s presence in a flower does not supplant the substance of the flower, though - He is only spiritually present in the flowers.
Everyone kind of jumped all over me for the 21st century thing. I just mean that we have a better understanding of the physical world now than in the bronze age when Jesus was on earth.

We certainly have a different understanding, but we also know that science is on a constant journey of discovery, and what is “true” today will be overturned tomorrow with more new discoveries, to the point where all we can say is that we really have no idea.

There was a time when it was a “known fact” that human beings could not withstand speeds greater than 60 miles per hour - today, we have people who can run that fast (not because of evolution, but because of intense life-long training) and certainly, we have vehicles that routinely travel much faster than that.
If some one says this was bread now its flesh I can test that claim and likely disprove it but we believe it is Jesus under the appearance of bread an wine not actual blood and flesh.

If this is so it is largely down to you wishing to tie God down to being able to do that which you - a fallible and limited human being - can understand and therefore easily accept. You are in effect limiting God to ‘your likeness’ and ‘your model’. Remember - God IS, before you ‘was’.

Essentially your problem lies with you, not God. I would suggest more prayers asking God for discernment.

My prayers are with you and I will be thinking of you when praying for the ‘luke warm’ in the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

But you refuse to accept that God can grant such powers to others. Moses was a man like us, yet he parted the Red Sea. Was that magical, or an expression of Divine Power.

If you read John 20, Christ granted the Apostles the power to forgive (or to bind) sin. Is that a power that you have too? Or is it something that was granted in the breath of the Spirit that Christ breathed into the Apostles. We have a name for that breath of the Spirit, it is the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

But the supernatural, by definition, includes God Himself. Are you at the point where you deny the existence of God?
