So after seeing a special on MSNBC on sex offenders, and checking my local sex offender registry, and comparing that with known gang-affiliated and violent repeat offender surveys, I seem to be thinking we have our priorities a little skewed.
-About 2 miles from me, lives a 26 yr old who was convicted in Ohio of urinating in a back alley near a college bar, which was roughly 800 feet from a middle school. He was required to register as a sex offender. The entire community was notified when he moved.
-Now, 1/2 a mile from my house, a 30 yr old guy moved in to a nice, big, fancy house in the urban sprawled suburb where I live. A Hispanic guy, that has quite alot of visitors. Some of my police buddies told me that he was a very high profile MS-13 gang member, who did 6 years for manslaughter at age 17, and is suspected in at least 26 violent felonies, including torturing a rival gang member by branding his body. They are almost certain he is still dealing with high-level MS-13, and even Mexican drug banderos. One guy told me that this gang member is one of the most violent people he has ever seen that is not a classic serial killer. NO ONE was notified when he moved here.
I also searched around and discovered 47 repeat violent offenders living within 2 miles of my development, including gang members, maffia associates, and 3-4 time convicted aggravated assault.
Do we have our priorities a little mixed up here? The rate of recidivism for sex offenders is roughly 1/3 that of general violent offenders, especially armed robbery and aggravated assault. We ban sex offenders from neighborhoods, but we seem not to care about people who torture, beat, burn, and kill others. There is not a single law that restricts a murderer or violent felon from living anywhere.
I think the sex offender thing is a knee-jerk reaction, especially when children are involved. But if you ever looked at the recidivism rates for non-sexual violent offenders vs sexual offenders, you might want to live next to a sex offender vs an MS-13 gang member. Guys like MS-13, and multiple felons will blow your head off without thinking, and then do the same to your family just to send a message.
