Do we have to confess our sins to the victims of our sins? Here’s my situation: I destroyed some of my friend’s property out of anger, but he does not know I was the one who did this. I confessed this in confession, and I also am planning to make restitution by paying for the damage – anonymously. However, do I need to confess to my friend that I damaged his property? The problem is that I have fallen out of contact with him recently (although I could shoot him an email or a Facebook message); also, I don’t want to hurt our friendship with a confession if it isn’t necessary.

Thanks for the help!

I do not think you have to confess to the victims. I could be wrong, but I don’t think it’s part of reconciliation. If I’m wrong, I’m sure someone will point it out.

No you do not have to confess to your friend. You plan on making an anonymous restitution and have confessed before Jesus through a priest, that and whatever the priest says for penance is plenty good enough. Jesus has forgiven, now you must forgive yourself.

Because you have confessed the sin to the Lord, (via the priest), and made financial restitution, that is sufficient.

It might prove uncharitable to confess it to your friend. All the right things have been done.
