I believe the answer is definately yes! Just look at TV! Pornography! As for those without a sex partner, listen to those suffering from masturbation. They’re addicted to sex just like everyone else. We’re driven wild by our sex drive.

What is a normal sex drive anyway? I believe it is far less than most people experience in our society!

Imagine our economy if our sex drives were suddenly brought back to what is “normal.” Our economy would probably fall flat on its face.

Take a closer look at what Freud had to say about our sex drive. A normal sex drive was simply vaginal intercourse between a man and a woman. Our sexual desires were seen as being a primary human motive, which once sublimated would motivate us to work. Psychologists in the early part of the 1900s even predicted that we would soon be governed by a sex economy. At first glance it seems ridicules, but probe deeper at you will see the elements of truth.

Yes, we do. It’s how the leftist “progressives” destroy true love, families, and the Church. They pander to our basic instincts. Like a moth to the flame we go. Hard to believe that people voted for MORE of this…

Posts 1 & 2: 👍 And of course, the bible of that whole movement is Marcuse’s Eros & Civilization.

Uh, yes!!! You are spot-on! And it is destroying normal relationships and marriages (as I can testify). After finally convincing my then husband to seek help from a psychiatrist in a last ditch effort to save our family, the psychiatrist told him he was normal and that I was a prude!

Sure, porn and abnormal sexual habits were around well before the internet, but at least people used to have some sort of shame! We are not supposed to feel ashamed about anything anymore (according to almost every talk show). :(

I’m thinking that the sex economy is governed by Satan. Saying it’s the political left makes it seem less diabolic, and more a thing of chance.

The problem is that the “Normal sex drive” has been let off the leash through widespread use and availabilty of artificial contraception. Contraception has turned sex into a recreational activity.

Sixteen year old boys can buy condoms at Walmart and mothers take fifteen year old girls to the clinic for pills. Picking up chicks has become a vocation and even within the bounds of marriage, personal sexual gratification has replaced sacrificing one’s needs for the benefit of their spouse as the highest form of love.

Contraception renders the ability to make such a sacrifice impossible. It breeds selfishness and self-centeredness. It fosters a sense of entitlement. The end result is inescapable, no matter how big the compensatory effort or how forceful the rationalization. (Scraps for the Dogs, August 6, 2010, Dr. Michael Skoch, HLI America)

With the proliferation of contraception since the 1930’s, sex is now viewed as the highest form of personal expression and self realization as well as a constitutional right under the premiseof the persuit of happiness, placed on par with freedom of speech or freedom of religion. Modern Protestantism, with notable exceptions, is a major cause of societal views of sex without consequences as a “God given right” when it went from condemnation of contraception in the early 1900’s, to permitting “Prayerfully considered” contraception in the mid 1900’s, to calling contraception it “A gift from God” in the late 1900’s. My response is that if contraception is a gift from God then toppless bars, prostitution and pornography must be as well. Catholics who reject the Church’s teaching on contraception are no less culpable.

And that’s really my point. The sex economy is driven, at a very fundamental level, by artificial contraception. Contraception drives the whole of societies view of sex as a recreational activity and is therefor the root cause of the societal ills which the sex economy creates. Pornography addiction. Prostitution. Children born into familes without fathers. Even the economic pressure for abortion on demand, has as it’s root cause, condoms, pills, rings, implants, foams and vasectomies.

It’s definitely diabolic. A thing of chance? How so?

The easiest way to for the leftist progressives who lived through the baby boom to annoint themselves as saviors of the planet (from overpopulation by dirty humans) is to redirect sex from true love, pro-family procreative act into a lust sport. Once they have properly trained young people in the lust sport, the act will be focused on personal pleasure rather than true love and sacrifice for others. It’s working. More people are becoming less tolerant of marriage and kids. Just look at the ruined relationships and population declines of Europe and the U.S. (the indigenous US pop is declining, but growing overall due to immigration. This is another fact the progressives convenienty ignore). Progressives see themselves as heros. Every time I hear my priest use the term “Culture of Death,” I wonder if he’d like to preach something along these lines, but he knows that many parishioners will side with feelgood entertainment instead of doctrine. The influence of the leftist progressives is preventing too many people from finding great love, depth, and meaning in life. It’s part of the great Deception by leftist progressives. If only more people knew…

What I meant by a “thing of chance” is that in blaming it on the political left would make it something that evolved. People don’t speak much about Satan anymore, as if he has disappeared and has no influence over us. Our living in a sex economy today was the plot of Satan! Something thought out in advance, with the plan cleverly unfolding over the years! Satan has control over our thoughts and desires!

Does sex really make up that large a fraction of our economy? What about finance? Construction? Manufacturing?

Sex is what drives the motivation to work. It’s unconscious, with the sex drive being sublimated into good work habits. This is classic psychology.

If by “classic”, you mean Freudian, then yes it’s classic, but it’s also outdated. Freud hasn’t been relevant for decades.

Some of Freud’s classic thought, such as the superego, id and ego is the closest psychology has come to mimic religion. The superego would be analogous to God the Father, the ego, to the self, and the id to sinful thoughts and desires. Freud’s thoughts are so broad the they affected a range of psychology, especially personality. In my estimate, Freud is alive and well in many areas of psychology.

The economy is greatly dependent on sex- everywhere.

You’ve heard the saying “sex sells”…

Well, it does, everywhere…

sexy cars, sexy clothes, sexy bodies, sexy makeup (and hair and…)

have money - to be sexy; get on birth control- to have sex

for men, money buys sex, power buys sexy women

for women, being sexy gets wealthy men

sexy= desired life

I could go but the personal havoc this has wreaked on me makes me feel ill.

It is pervasive… it truly runs the world (along with greed).

OP: good post.

I sometimes wonder if sex is valued too highly. . . as if it’s the ONLY thing.

There are plenty of other things in life that are valuable, are pleasurable, create enjoyment, etc.

It might resemble religious doctrine, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it squares with the evidence. He may be alive and well in your estimate, but not in science’s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis#Scientific_criticism

This is really less a product of the the left than of capitalism and modern advertising. Although the left often have a more permissive attitude, the way sex has become so intertwined with our economy is more a function of it’s use in selling almost everything.

Lets look at the process of sublimation, which is indeed popular in modern psychology.

Sublimation: A defense mechanism where undesired or unacceptable impulses are transformed into behaviors which are accepted by society.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Who sells materialsm? Where do they advertise for consumerist products? The left owns TV, movies, and music. In this way, they can profit from fashions that cause people to discard these perfectly functional clothes (so you’ll feel coerced to buy new clothing so as not to be “judged” to be out of fashion by nameless, faceless oligarchs who get to decide what’s “in”).

Yes, we live in a sex economy. Sex sells and makes things sell and is relatively cheap (from a monetary standpoint) to use. Debauchery is not really a modern invention, however, it has been around since ancient times and pagan cultures, while perhaps they weren’t so much into “free love”, had their own awful celebrations of ritual prostitution or adultery. A lot of bad things are happening now but a lot of bad things that have happened before are not happening now any more unless in vile dictatorships or places with really bad crime rates (which, unfortunately, are not all that rare in civilised countries).
