Do we own our souls, or does God?

Hey everyone,

Just a quick, random question: Do we own our souls/bodies or does God? How does free will factor in?

I’m guessing God owns our souls and owns everything since He created everything, I was just wondering. 🙂

I believe that God should own our souls. However, he gave us free will. So we have to choose to let him do that.
 
God is the owner of our souls according to the Book of Ezekiel, the third Latter Prophet after Isaiah and Jeremiah.

Douay-Rheims Bible:
Behold all souls are mine: as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, the same shall die. (Ez. 18:4)

As I recall both our bodies and our souls belong to God. That is why suicide is a sin; our live belong to God, not to us.
 
Yes because He created us and sustains our existence.

Doubly yes if we have been baptized, because then we are His adopted sons and daughters and are called to make our lives living sacrifices for His glory.

But He gives us a choice, to take ownership of our own souls. That ends in hell. Most people, it seems, make this choice (including Catholics); however, we hope for our salvation and the salvation of all souls.
 
God creates our souls, from nothing. If he forgets about us, we will be only be held in existence by the material from which we are created, which is nothing. In short, if God ceases to hold us in existence, we cease to exist. So no, we don’t “own” our souls. Or anything else.

I think we belong to God and he has given us the gift of life. and from the gift of life comes a whole bunch of other gifts and responsibilities such as caring for ourselves in his name …etc
 
God created us from nothing, so He should own it all. But we were also created with free will. When Adam and Eve sinned, they were basically saying, “We can do this better than you.” So, we took on the responsibility of our bodies and souls. We can either give them back to God, or we can hold them for ourselves. Often times, in pride, we don’t want to let go. We want to remain completely in charge of ourselves. But that only ends in hell. Each day we must make the choice on who is to have rule over ourselves, ourself or God.

So does He own the souls of those in hell?
 
God is One, meaning that there exists nothing other than Him. If we were to see God face-to-face, we would cease to exist.
 
Maybe I am getting to philosophical but could it be that we all belong to each other with God? We are all the one body in union with the Blessed Trinity so would we not be a gift for each other and God?

Really, you think most souls go to hell? That is disturbing.
 
According to what I understand from some of the Saints, we are born slaves to sin, in the grip of the devil, and Jesus Christ by the Blood of His Cross, frees us from that. In Baptism, He claims the soul for Himself.
