I know I’m probably going to get flamed for what I’m about to say, but I’ll say it anyway:
Aquinas, Anselm, and all these other philosophers who try to prove that God exists…I believe they’re fighting the wrong battle. They try to explain that which by its very nature cannot be explained. I think, instead of trying to innovate these ideas to try to prove God’s existence rationally, we should just work with the gift that God Himself already gave us: Faith.
I believe what we should do is not prove that God exists, but rather, just prove why it’s best to believe in Him. We can’t prove His existence; to be able to prove His existence implies that He is part of the physical, which in turn implies that He has limits, which is obviously false.
This is where I believe Pascal and his Wager really hit the nail on the head. Without any complicated reasoning, using simple logic and probability, he gives proof that it’s better to be a believer than a non-believer. He doesn’t even address the “does he exist?” issue because he knows it’s an unanswerable question. We can’t prove God exists; all we can do is continue to have faith in Him and convince others of the logicality of having faith over doubting.
