I was brought wide awake this morning while reading Morning Prayer for September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.

I was reading along , as usual, until I came to the antiphon for the Canticle of Zechariah.

It says: We worship your cross O Lord, and we praise and glorify your holy resurrection, for the wood of the cross has brought joy to the world.

This cannot be right! How can we worship the cross?
Can someone please clarify this for me?

Thank you and God bless

The word “worship” as used here means honor and veneration, not the reverence due to God alone. For a detailed discussion on the usage of the word “worship” see our tract Saint Worship.
