Do we still believe in Purgatory?

Hi, I am a confused Catholic. Actually I am confused about a lot of stuff, but regarding Catholic teaching. . . I have been praying for the souls in purgatory daily and have always felt strongly that I could never stand before our Fathers’s perfect love with my sinful self, so the idea of a place to expiate my sins was a comfort. But we don’t believe in purgatory anymore because it negates the idea of the cross? Is that right?
