Do we undergo purification during the last moments of life?

We are all individuals and God treats as such even at the moments leading to death. He just might, with some people, allow them to experience a necessary stage of purification just before leaving this Earth that for others will be postponed until physical death. Who knows?🤷 I do believe in every case His loving mercy does whatever is most beneficial for the eternal salvation of every individual soul. What we have to do is trust in that mercy and accept it when the time comes.

I have an update reply - to OP’s question and on my initial response. I visit my father in nursing home and see so many cases of so many different things. Today, I watched one patient who I’ve watched so often before. And suddenly, I realized - God is working there. She can’t possibly “offer up” anything - even though she’s conscious. Surely, these people, each in their own way, have their own quiet Calvary - some in their illnesses and some very alone and unvisited - whether or not they realize. Anyway, I sat there today, knowing that I stand corrected - and that I had to post this tonight.

Thanks for starting this thread and for all those who have shared their experiences.

I still have my dad/mum, brothers/sisters and my own family so have not faced death of an immediate family member.

I know I want to spend my eternity in heaven, yet suffering, sickness and death (my own and my dear ones) frighten me. I am not sure how I will deal with it. I always pray that God prepares me to accept my death and the deaths of those I love. I also pray that all of us are united in heaven because I cannot bear the thought of my family being anywhere else other than in purgutory or heaven.

I know St. Joseph is the patron saint of a happy death and when I was a child my mother taught me this prayer.

Jesus, Mary & Joseph I give you my heart and soul.
Jesus, Mary & Joseph assist me in my last agony.
Jesus, Mary & Joseph may I breathe forth my soul in peace with you.

I have also read that reciting the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, greatly aids dying people.
