Do we you abstain Monday thru Saturday during Lent?

Having only been a Catholic for four years, I have lots of unanswered question. My immediate question is regarding the giving up of something during Lent - I was told that you abstain Monday thru Saturday but Sunday is a “freebie” so to speak. Can you please tell if this is true or not as I get mixed answers on this. Thank you. Lori Carter
