I’ve heard that women tend to change after marriage. Is that true? And if so, how do they change? Just want to understand what I can expect. Thank you.

Everybody changes over time, regardless of whether they are married or not.

With regard to marriage, people tend to be more “comfortable,” both in a negative and positive way. People tend to be on their good behavior when dating, because they like the person, want to treat the person well, and do not want them to leave. One a couple is married, nobody’s leaving, so less effort is often placed on “good behavior.” That’s actually good for a compatible couple, since they can get right down to business in whatever they are doing. It can be really bad if the couple does not get along well, because the couple may view it as not loving each other anymore, etc.

It has nothing to do with woman specifically changing; both men and woman change.

Women and Men both change. They change as life circumstances change: marriage, children, job changes, moves, aging…there is no normal, there is no box, there is nothing that stays the same. The only thing you can control is your communication, your commitment, your determination. One of you will go up while the other goes down…you’ll take turns pulling each other along and holding the other up. There will be times where both of you will be in the dumps or on top of the mountain. There will be times where you feel stagnant. There will be times where you want to quit, but you have to determine not to give up. This is life. There will always be something new and there will always be change.

both men and women change after marriage. That’s why it can be important not to live together in one house before marriage. You get used to one another the way they are. And when this changes after marriage, it can be frustrating that your spouse has changed. Just trust in the Lord, if you have doubts that everything will be alright if you start living together after marriage. You’re under the sacramental protection of Him!

No matter what anyone does or says nothing can totally prepare you for marriage or children but it is the best thing you can ever do!

4 arms, with the new pair growing directly underneath the first two. It’s kind of creepy at first but you get used to it after awhile.

My wife changed and I have both changed since our marriage. My wife would tell you that she has changed much more than I have … and I would agree with that statement.

I would think that both men and women change after marriage. After all now both are living with each other, personality crashes will occur, they both have to learn a deeper meaning of what love is, how to give and take, deal with financial issues, jobs, schedules, each others families, and so on.

Of course they change, we all do. The real question is how does each partner handle that change, do they grow or stall, try to control or free the other person, learn to share, get lazy and complacent, or stay on top of their relationship and work on it everyday?

Well, for starters, if they get pregnant, their bodies change in unexpected ways and very often will never be the same. Hips get broader, rib cage expands, length of back of neck gets slightly longer. And these are just skeletal changes. She also is likely to have more body fat for nourishing the baby.
Also, the personality changes, usually for the better. Very often, as women age, they get more focused on holiness than they were in their younger years.
So yes, marriage, motherhood and age change women, but then women are people and all people change somewhat over their lifetimes.😛

If you’re going to be a parent, remember that when the books tell you what to expect, they leave out the really interesting stuff. This is true about marriage, too. Using an athletic analogy, keep your knees bent, and stay on the balls of your feet. Be ready for something you had no clue was going to happen. You and your family members are going to keep changing, and your Maker has a sense of humor! Not only that, but your Adversary is sly and subtle. Stay awake, and keep watch.

Every woman is different. Expect to have to ask questions and listen in order to know what your wife is thinking and feeling and how she is changing–or not changing! John Gottman has some good books on how to communicate without unwittingly going on the defensive or putting your spouse on the defensive, either. There is nothing that makes change not just survivable but enjoyable like making communication a priority.

If it doesn’t work for you to have her asking questions of you and wanting you to give feelings updates, then learn ways that work for you concerning how to let her take your pulse, too. If she feels she knows what is going on with you, that will tend to lower her anxiety levels about how your relationship is going, which is a good thing.

Before I married, I was young and twenty-something. I was a beautiful youthful idealist. After twenty-something years of marriage, I am no longer young. I act like I’m responsible for a mortgage and a half dozen children or so. I no longer act carefree and I have stretch marks on my abdomen. I even look older. Since I was not old before I got married, on occasion I point out to my husband what he did to me.

And what have you done to him???, I think all that could apply to him too, except maybe for the stretch marks. God Bless, Memaw

Ah, well that would have to be part of a different thread. 😉

I am going to provide the different opinion here. No one “changes” after marriage. What happens is that you never got to know the real “me” in that person before the marriage and when thye get married and move in and inevitable the real me comes out, then the other person thinks they changed. Marriage does not have a magical wand that the same day you get married it is going to cause a miraculous change in personality that exact day and at that time. It doesn’t work that way. Yes people can change over a period of life but usually this change happens over many years and is the product of life circumstances that make you reconsider things and change. No one does a drastic personality change over nighttime and if you notice the people who often complain that their spouse “changed” what they refer to is to an overnight change of personality from before the wedding date to right after the wedding date. Again, that is not true. That means you never knew your spouse. On the other hand if you talk to people who think that their spouse didn’t change after the marriage you will find out that these are people who did know pretty well their spouse before marriage.

MaryMary got to this point before I could. This is it in a nutshell.

If you notice you are talking here about a change that occurred over the time frame if about 20 years. Did you find out five days after marriage that your husband had a radically different personality than the one he had the week before? When people make the comment “women change after” marriage they usually don’t refer to a change over 20 years specially since the ones you hear that complain are usually people who have been married for a short period of the. What they usually refer to is to the latter.
